The old benches we had were at the end of their usefulness.\r\n\r\nThe Kreg work bench that you donated is made of steel and bolts together. It will withstand years of use. \r\n\r\nWe laminated two sheets of 3/4 plywood to create the work surface. We also added hardboard on top to create an ultra smooth surface. Wax will be applied so glue does not stick to the work top.\r\n\r\nThe students are currently building step stool. We have the parts of the stool cut to size. The table saw is used by my students daily to compete cutting tasks in our shop. \r\nThe sawstop has flesh sensing technology. If the blade is contacted by a finger, the break activates and keeps the user from being seriously injured. By many accounts you walk away from the saw with a slight cut.\r\n\r\nIf wet wood with a high moisture content contacts the blade you sometimes get a brake activation. Saw blade and brake are trashed.\r\n\r\nDue to you generosity we have a pair of brakes on hand ready to be installed in the saw if needed. \r\n\r\nWork in the shop can continue without having to wait for a shipment. These weren't practice toys. These were the real thing, and my students knew it.\r\n\r\nWe put the tools to work right away. Students practiced making watertight compression fittings on copper pipe sections, learning how to seat a ferrule, tighten a nut to the right feel, and test their own connections. For students who sometimes struggle with reading comprehension or abstract concepts, watching water not leak because of something they did with their own hands is a powerful moment. One of my students — who rarely volunteers for anything — asked if he could demonstrate the crimping tool to the class. He did it perfectly, and the pride on his face said everything.\r\nNext, we're moving into a small group project where students will plan and assemble a simple cold-water supply line using all three connection methods — compression, crimp, and expansion — so they can compare the techniques side by side.
