The rug was here before school started and has made our \"living room\" area so comfy. The students all want to sit in this area. The carpet is such good quality that students like to sit or lay on it while doing their work. Since everyone wants to sit in this area, students have to take turns. They are only allowed in the \"living room\" once a day. That's how popular it is! \r\n\r\nThis year, my guided reading groups are challenged to read one chapter book a month. Every Friday, a parent comes in and leads book talk about their assigned books. I have notice some of my parents try to snag up this cozy area for their book talks. We read these stories together during our morning meetings and class discussions, where they provide a safe and engaging way to talk about emotions, friendships, problem-solving, and self-control. The colorful characters and relatable situations make it easy for my third graders to connect the lessons in the books to experiences in their own lives. As we read, students eagerly share personal stories, ask thoughtful questions, and discuss different ways they can handle challenging situations.\r\n\r\nThese books have become an important part of helping my students build the social-emotional skills they need to be successful both inside and outside the classroom. We use them to introduce vocabulary for identifying emotions, practice empathy by considering how others feel, and develop strategies for managing frustration, anxiety, and conflict. The stories have encouraged meaningful conversations that help students understand that everyone experiences big feelings and that there are healthy ways to work through them.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching students make connections to the books throughout the school day. I've heard them remind one another about strategies we learned from a \"Little SPOT\" story when someone is feeling frustrated or nervous, and I've seen students become more comfortable talking about their emotions using the language from the books. Your generosity has provided more than just new books; it has given my students tools that help create a classroom where everyone feels supported, understood, and ready to learn.
