I had the books as a class set for students every period to read. In my classes with high concentrations of English Language Learner students, we primarily read the \"No Fear\" modern translation version of the text. My advanced studies students read the original Shakespeare, but they used the modern translations occasionally to improve comprehension.\r\n\r\nEvery day, students knew to open their books on their desks to the Act or Scene that we were currently reading in class. Then, students volunteered to read specific roles in the play out loud, pausing every few pages for class discussions. At times, we even brought the books to the front of the room and acted out scenes from the play (with foam sword props and everything!) These readings were interspersed with analysis activities, quizzes, and assessments to monitor and develop students' progress toward larger state standards.\r\n\r\nMy classes have maybe never been as engaged and excited about a text we read in class! Having a class set of these books ignited many students interest in literature (and Shakespeare's work specifically). Because of you, my students have their own books in their hands, and it has completely changed the feel of our classroom in the best way.\r\n\r\nWe've just started our Romeo and Juliet unit, and the energy has been amazing. I teach a range of learners from students who need extra reading support to honors-level students and every group is truly engaged. They're diving into themes, breaking down character development, and having thoughtful conversations about decision-making, loyalty, fate, impulsivity, and consequences. Having class sets of the books has made it so much easier to meet students where they are while still bringing everyone together for rich, shared discussions.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part has been watching reluctant readers come alive. Students come to class asking to be assigned roles to read. Some read with dramatic accents and fully step into their characters. Yesterday, while reading Act 3, Scene 1—the big action scene—they acted it out with foam swords. The room was full of laughter and excitement, but also real analysis about how one impulsive decision can change everything.\r\n\r\nStudents who don't usually engage in class readings are now asking to participate. One student even told me I've \"made reading fun.\" That comment really stuck with me and is a direct reflection of your generosity.\r\n\r\nWe've even developed inside jokes like quoting \"my baby hawk\" from the balcony scene (on the translation side of the book). Moments like that show they aren't just reading the text, they're connecting to it and making it part of our classroom culture.\r\n\r\nThese books have helped me teach state standards like theme analysis, character development, textual evidence, and critical thinking, but more importantly, they've helped me nurture a real appreciation for literature and storytelling. Students are constantly in need of chargers each day in order to work on their laptops, especially for testing days. So far, several students per class period have used these chargers to help them be able to engage in classwork. I post their notes and assignments online, so that if they cannot see the board, they are able to find items online. This does require their laptops to be charged. The red pens are used for students to peer review each other's assignments and to make marks/comments. Items such as the glue, notebooks, and index cards have been used daily by students. The magnetic tape has been used to help labels and borders stay on the whiteboards. The labels help to section out important information for students on the board. I often use index cards for various things, thus they tend to run out relatively quickly. I have been using them mostly to help introduce vocabulary words and key terms to students. I have also been using them for group activities which require me to have sets to words. \r\nStudents have been using the wite-out to correct errors on their papers. Typically this also runs out quickly.
