We recently had our very first meeting with 44 students who have been assigned various jobs: reporter, production team, post production team, and writers. These students are on four different crews: \r\n\r\nTeam A: student of the month crew\r\nThese students will create productions that interview different students who have been nominated by staff members because of exceptional behavior at school. These interviews will be completely student led and will be bilingual for the students in our dual immersion program.\r\n\r\nTeam B: announcements crew\r\nThis crew will record announcements for our student council as well as for our school. These announcements will be bilingual for the entire school.\r\n\r\nTeam C: Hot seat crew\r\nThis team will go around campus asking students their opinions on various world topics (i.e. \"Who do you think will win the Superbowl?\") and also ask questions related to our school. This will also be bilingual.\r\n\r\nWriters: \r\nAll of our productions will start with out fabulous writers. They have been hard at work already creating scripts for our interviews and are currently working on our first announcement script that explains OWL TV to our student population.\r\n\r\nStudents will be using the donated iPad to do all of our video recording. The microphones that were donated pick up sound really well, even when there is background noise. And the stand that holds the iPad is pretty user friendly so students have gotten the hang of how to attach it. \r\n\r\nIt has taken a lot of work and planning to get to where we are now, but the excitement is palpable during our meetings and productions. We had our very first interview with our principal this week. Students had to practice setting up the iPad on the stand and microphones. They also practiced a run through to perfect the production. We are now in the post production phase of our first video and can't wait to launch it for our student population to see.\r\n\r\nI am so grateful to have been given this opportunity for many reasons. First, this allows our dual immersion students to practice their Spanish in multiple modalities. Secondly, this is giving so many students practical experience of what it is like to work in the real world on a production. And finally, seeing the excitement from students and the hard work they are putting in has given us true joy. It has brought a new pride to our school as we are creating something beautiful that is almost completely student led.\r\n\r\nI am so thankful for your generosity. Because of your generosity, our students now have an iPad, stand, and wireless microphones that have helped turn our classroom into a small news studio. Students used this technology to write and record their own news segments while practicing important language skills. As they prepared their broadcasts, students worked on writing ten-sentence scripts using past tense verbs and creative storytelling. The iPad allowed them to record and review their work, helping them reflect on their speaking and make improvements along the way.\r\n\r\nThe microphones and stand made the experience especially exciting for students because they truly felt like real news anchors. They eagerly volunteered for different roles such as anchors, reporters, and producers. While preparing their broadcasts, students practiced giving constructive critiques and supportive feedback to one another. This collaborative process helped them strengthen key language learning domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding outcomes has been seeing students grow more confident and verbal. Some students who were initially hesitant to speak in front of others are now excited to participate and share their ideas on camera. We continue to use the equipment to practice these language skills through new projects, and the enthusiasm in the classroom has been wonderful to see.
