All of our students love to read picture books but they are mostly way below their reading level. While they love pictures these books are in their reading level. My students have been extremely excited to see the new materials, and LEGO has quickly become one of the activities they look forward to most. We are using the sets as part of structured therapy sessions to address fine motor coordination, bilateral hand use, visual-motor skills, following multi-step directions, attention, and task completion. Building and manipulating the small pieces also provides repeated opportunities to strengthen the hands and fingers in a way that feels like play rather than work.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest benefits I have noticed is improved hand strength and endurance. Many of my students struggle with handwriting tasks because their hands fatigue quickly. Manipulating, connecting, and separating LEGO pieces requires sustained use of the small muscles of the hands and fingers. We are using that increased strength and endurance to support functional classroom skills such as pencil control, handwriting, cutting, and completing longer tabletop activities. I have also been able to use LEGO as a motivating transition between more challenging occupational therapy activities, which has helped students remain engaged and participate for longer periods of time.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we will continue incorporating LEGO into individualized OT activities while gradually increasing the complexity and length of the building projects. Students will work on following increasingly detailed visual directions, completing multi-step builds, strengthening problem-solving skills, and sustaining attention through longer tasks. Most importantly, we will continue connecting the skills they develop through building to their classroom goals—especially handwriting endurance, fine motor control, independence, and confidence.
