My students are in grades 3–6 and have a wide range of communication and learning needs. The cozy bean bag chair immediately became a favorite place to relax, regulate emotions, and enjoy a good book. During our Pete the Cat literacy unit, students gathered in the reading corner to listen to stories, explore multiple Pete the Cat books, build words with magnetic letters, practice beginning sounds and sight words, answer comprehension questions using speech and AAC devices, and participate in shared reading activities. Having a comfortable, inviting place to learn has helped students remain engaged longer and has made reading a positive experience they look forward to each day.\r\n\r\nThe excitement when the materials arrived was unforgettable! Students couldn't wait to sit in the giant bean bag, pick out a Pete the Cat book, and make the reading corner their own. Even some of my students who are typically reluctant to participate in literacy activities were eager to explore the new space. The bean bag quickly became a calming place where students could enjoy books, practice communication, and build confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nThis reading corner continues to grow along with our program. As we begin our second year, we have welcomed additional students and are expanding our collection of adapted books and literacy activities. The reading corner will continue to be used for phonics instruction, shared reading, independent reading, communication practice, and book studies based on our students' individual interests. We are also excited to begin incorporating music and movement into our literacy lessons to help students communicate, engage, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Thank you for creating a space where our students feel safe, successful, and excited to read. Your kindness has made a lasting difference in our classroom and in the lives of the amazing children we are privileged to teach.\r\n\r\nI genuinely think this is one of the stronger donor updates because it does more than say \"thank you.\" It shows that their gift became a permanent part of your classroom culture, which is exactly what donors hope to hear. I also suspect those photos will make the update especially memorable—they really showcase a warm, inviting literacy space.","fullyFundedDate":1762267698554,"projectUrl":"project/groovy-reading-corner-for-a-brand-new-as/9621553/","projectTitle":"Groovy Reading Corner for a Brand-New ASD Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Holmes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10187840"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70718","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":435,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"3 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"18.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":84.6,"schoolId":70718,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oakridge Upper Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oakridge Upper Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/oakridge-school-district/oakridge-upper-elementary-school/70718"}
