When I first introduced the microscope my students did not have an understanding of what we were using. They were uninterested, as they never had experience with a microscope or science tools. I worked slowly with the premade slides to show them we can see small items. I worked with students one on one to build interest. We learned about the functions of microscopes and how to use them. The premade slides helped introduce the students to scientific tools and see things we normally could not see. After some exposure, most of my students became very interested. I attempt to make it known as often as I can. One day we arrived in Horticulture class and the arugula plants had turned hard and white. I took some leaves and said, I wonder what they look like under a microscope compared to a healthy plant. That afternoon we compared leaves. I am frequently thinking out loud to create inquisitive students. \r\n\r\nWe used these slides to look at animal cells and parts. We have been using the microscope once a week to look at various topics. One week, we took a nature walk and gathered various plants under a microscope. We even looked at the inside and outside of various fruits from our teacher's lunch. Most recently we did dna extraction lab using strawberries and pine berries. Students enjoyed the hands on activity. The pine berry had a red line in the middle of the slide that we could not see on our own. \r\n\r\nI have been actively looking for more ways to use the microscope. I have found some other slides that show process of mitosis and meiosis. When we teach about decomposers, I have learned about a lab to get mushroom spores from store bought mushrooms. I believe students will enjoy looking at mushrooms close up and seeing spores that get transmitted through the air to grow new fungi. I look forward to using this as we approach our plant units, and talk about animal coverings. The premade slides include fish scales fur/hair from various animals.\r\n\r\nThe students enjoyed looking at new things. Due to my student's disabilities, the screen makes learning more accessible, and they do not need to try to look through an eye piece, i love how the lens comes off and students can manipulate the scope with their hands, and still view the screen. Some of my students are working on grasping objects. This microscope helps students learn to handle materials with care, while exposing them to materials that their neurotypical peers get to use as well. We appreciate your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1766003683724,"projectUrl":"project/life-through-a-lens/9949403/","projectTitle":"Life Through a Lens","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stinger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10167230"},{"teacherId":9320623,"projectId":9813613,"letterContent":"My students have been so excited about their new sensory items. Many have used them to calm down and return to work in my classroom. One of the favorite earned activities is the dentist play dough set. This encourages motor skills and helps them grasping items. Every item has a purpose or two in my classroom. \r\nWe recently used the stencils to create a school collaborative mural. Each student got to choose a stencil shape and paint it. Soon I will be hanging it up in the hallway and I can't wait for them to see their work up.\r\nI will continue to use these items daily in my classroom and look forward to coming up with more projects to use these items.","fullyFundedDate":1770078765816,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-and-art-tools-refresh/9813613/","projectTitle":"Sensory and Art Tools Refresh","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Jessica","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9320623_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1696704762210","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9320623"},{"teacherId":8742956,"projectId":9931634,"letterContent":"My students have had so much fun with all of the new things we were able to purchase due to the generous donations from each of you!
