Through this text, students developed skills in close reading, analyzing characterization, identifying themes, examining symbolism and figurative language, and supporting their ideas with textual evidence. Reading became a shared classroom experience: students read independently and aloud, annotated important passages, discussed the characters' choices, and connected the events of the novel to larger ideas about courage, loss, friendship, humanity, and the power of words. Having enough copies for every student allowed everyone to participate fully without needing to share or depend on technology. Many students, especially those who enjoy historical fiction or are sometimes reluctant to read, became invested in Liesel's story and were eager to discuss the novel's unexpected narrator, illustrations, and emotional moments. The books helped create a community of readers and showed students that literature can challenge them, move them, and help them better understand both history and one another.
