The new distiller has been very useful for our science department. Already, just in my class, we have used our distilled water in several labs, which would not have gotten the same useful results with tap water. A few weeks ago, the students tested the solubility and conductivity of compounds to determine the bond type. Without distilled water, the conductivity values would be too similar. This past week, students used distilled water to test various salts and solvents for polarity and to determine the best contents for a homemade snow globe. The distilled water ensured the solubility results would match what is expected. Other teachers have used the distiller for labs in biology and environmental science.\r\n\r\nLater in the year, distilled water is important for many of the reactions labs we perform. For example, we have a few labs where students perform a reaction with solutions, isolate and dry the product, and determine their percent yield. The impurities in non-distilled water could influence their results, particularly with the small quantities that are used. It will also be used for to determine the characteristics of soil in AP Environmental Science, and to show the effects of osmosis in biology. \r\n\r\nAs a school and department, we pride ourselves in being able to create the best possible lab experiences for our students, and to fight against misconceptions brought on by poor lab results. The new water distiller is a boon for that goal, and we are all very thankful!","fullyFundedDate":1758748937033,"projectUrl":"project/chemistry-students-need-quality-water/9421504/","projectTitle":"Chemistry Students need Quality Water","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Fanelli","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10058997"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80628","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1261,"numTeachers":113,"percentFrplEligible":2,"percentAsian":16,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":69,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":80628,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Northern Highlands Regional High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Northern Highlands Regional High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/northern-highlands-reg-hsd/northern-highlands-regional-high-school/80628"}
