We put them to work right away across our K-2 STEAM lessons to make abstract science concepts tangible. Kindergarteners built protective animal shelters, and first graders engineered river otter habitats, but a standout moment was with our second graders during their life cycles unit. They used the planks to construct large Venn diagrams directly on their desks, using dry-erase markers on the wood to compare the life cycles of painted lady butterflies and darkling beetles. Seeing students who typically struggle with traditional worksheets completely locked in, collaborating, and proudly using physical structures to explain scientific relationships was incredible.\r\nLooking ahead, we are taking these foundational hands-on experiences to the next level by introducing structural engineering and load-bearing design challenges. Now that our students have mastered using the planks for spatial organization and basic balance, our upper elementary grades will be testing physics concepts like cantilever bridges, gravity, and architectural balance. We are also preparing for an upcoming school-wide STEAM showcase where students will work in teams to design and present large-scale, collaborative structures.
