That alone would have been an exciting introduction to brain computer interfaces. However, once the materials arrived and students began exploring what was possible, we realized we could take the learning much further.\r\n\r\nInstead of stopping at a light, we challenged students to think about how this technology is used in the real world—especially to support people with disabilities. This shift led us to redesign the project around controlling a robotic prototype hand. Students learned how real prosthetics work and how electrical signals from the body or brain can be translated into movement. This connection transformed the activity from a technical experiment into a meaningful exploration of assistive technology.\r\n\r\nStudents began by building and testing a physical model of a hand, then added servo motors and microcontrollers to control movement. They wrote code to control the hand using buttons, muscle signals, and eventually EEG input. Seeing the hand move in response to their own signals was a powerful moment, and many students were very proud.\r\n\r\nThis shift in focus increased engagement and deepened student understanding. They weren't just learning about circuits, coding, or brain signals, they were learning empathy, problem-solving, and how engineering can be used to help others. What began as a simple idea grew into an ambitious, impactful project that showed students just how capable they are when given the right tools and encouragement.\r\n\r\nI thought the brain computer interface portion of the project would involve a great deal of trial and error, but it turns out making the hand prototype was just as much of a skill building exercise in problem solving which became one of the most valuable lessons of all. Students are learning perseverance, resilience, and how to learn from failure; skills that matter far beyond the classroom. \r\n\r\nBuilding something that responds to their own brain signals is an experience they won't soon forget, and it's all possible because of your support. Thank you for giving our students the opportunity to think big and build boldly.","fullyFundedDate":1758849933668,"projectUrl":"project/brain-computer-interfaces-bci-snap-c/9668875/","projectTitle":"Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) + Snap Circuits","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Byrne","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10234812"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61742","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":494,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":13,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":83,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":86.2,"schoolId":61742,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North Reading Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North Reading Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/north-reading-public-school-district/north-reading-middle-school/61742"}
