While this has been great for attention spans, it presented us with a problem in art class. All my students turn in their visual art work digitally, and I teach basic photography standards, emphasizing the importance of quality photos to build a strong art portfolio. \r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, we have been able to seamlessly continue this practice, using the digital cameras your grant has provided. Because we were able to purchase a class set, every student has equal access to a camera to photograph and submit their projects. This also reduces down time, since students do not have to wait in line to use a camera, they just trade their ID badge to check one out! \r\n\r\nThank you again for providing us a solution to what could have been a big problem!","fullyFundedDate":1755727829512,"projectUrl":"project/one-click-wonders-digital-cameras-for-a/9602186/","projectTitle":"One-click Wonders: Digital Cameras for Art","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Matthey-Hicks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1038472_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1625798201384","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1038472"},{"teacherId":1038472,"projectId":9129815,"letterContent":"I have a larger than ever AP Art and design enrollment this year, many of whom have never taken an AP class before. A large part of the AP curriculum is experimentation with processes and materials. None of the students in my AP class had ever used any printmaking techniques before. They have had so much fun learning and playing with gel prints and linocuts thanks to the donations you provided. I can say the same for the texture gel mediums and alcohol inks (especially the metallic ones!). I am including some photos of our first couple projects that my students brought to life after experimenting with these new supplies. \r\nAs the year progresses, and their experience grows, I fully expect these students to come up with even more creative ways to incorporate these extra special materials into new works of art! And those are just the ones that students are taking with them outside my room. Countless others have been grabbed off shelves to read in class during our designated reading time.\r\nThis year, I have begun hosting periodic book chats with individuals and small groups to discuss students' current reads, gauge their interests, and continue to build a book-positive culture in our classroom. I love hearing about what my kids are reading, but one unexpected surprise has been hearing students share their favorite book recommendations with each other. For example, the graphic novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, has soared to the top of my most checked-out book list, thanks to an enthusiastic endorsement from one young man. \r\nOn behalf of my students, I am truly appreciative of the gift you have given us, allowing my students to not only see themselves in these stories, but see their peers, who may or may not be like them. We are competing with phones, absenteeism, and lack of motivation for schoolwork. As my principal once told me, \"Thank you for making school fun again.\" And I want to pass that appreciation on to you, my donors. My goal for this project was to ignite that spark in reluctant readers that I feel when I get swept up into a great book.\r\n\r\nMy school is on block scheduling, so the first 15 of each 90 minute period, we listen to calming music, and we read. I've made it clear that this is a time is not for catching up on work or anything else except reading a good book. Even I don't try to multitask during this time. I, too, grab my current classroom read and gift myself that 15 minutes of escape into a book. . One day a couple weeks after our new books arrived, I noticed one student who had been pretending to read, just staring into space for the entire15 minute reading time. When I asked how he could stand to just sit there for that long, he told me it was because he just doesn't enjoy reading. I asked if he would give it a chance if I could find a book he liked. He reluctantly agreed. I grabbed A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. This book is instantly gripping and took him by surprise. It is also written in poetry form, which makes the book a much more quick read. He finished it within a couple class periods, and even let me recommend another after that. By the end of the fall semester, I had paired up nearly every student in my classroom with a book they actually wanted to read. I even had former students stopping by my room to check out a book from our class library. \r\n\r\nWithout your help, I would certainly not have been able to keep our book selection exciting and engaging.
