Your support has brought missing series volumes and vibrant new titles to our shelves, giving our diverse student body access to books that inspire and reflect who they are. Beyond boosting basic literacy, these high-interest books help our students develop critical thinking skills as they analyze complex, multi-book story arcs, while the diverse voices in our new collection foster deep empathy during these pivotal high school years.\r\n\r\nBecause of your gift, the library has become a buzzing, community-driven space. We see students passing a finished book directly to a friend before it even hits the return bin. This influx of fresh literature has made an immediate impact, particularly for our economically disadvantaged students—about half of our student body—who now have equitable access to the trending, high-quality literature they deserve.\r\n\r\nOur students are curious and creative, and by investing in our library, you have given them a space where they feel seen and inspired to learn, grow, and imagine something new. With the new resources, my students stepped out of the traditional textbook and into the role of cosmetic scientists by creating their own custom lip balms. This project served as the perfect hands-on application of key chemistry concepts like intermolecular forces, melting points, and the properties of hydrophobic versus hydrophilic substances. Watching the students carefully measure out the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil, and then calculate the exact ratios needed to achieve the perfect texture, was a highlight of our semester. They were completely engaged, realizing that the makeup and personal care products they use every day are actually the result of precise chemical formulations.\r\nThe moment the boxes arrived and we unpacked the materials, the classroom energy was electric. When the students first saw the new beakers, empty tubes, and arrays of scents, their eyes lit up. Many of them couldn't believe that these high-quality supplies were actually for them. One student looked at the rows of empty lip balm tubes and asked, \"Are we actually allowed to keep what we make?\" There was an immediate shift from the usual routine to a sense of genuine ownership and pride..\r\nThe students made two versions of the chapstick and then improved the recipe for a third. They were then charged with designing marketing campaigns and product labels based on the specific chemical properties of their balms—such as creating formulas optimized for sun protection or intense hydration. Thank you for opening the door to this immersive learning experience; you have truly brought chemistry to life for these students!","fullyFundedDate":1774026316558,"projectUrl":"project/chapstick-design-competiton/10145987/","projectTitle":"Chapstick Design Competiton","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McCreery","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7505216"},{"teacherId":7293152,"projectId":9639242,"letterContent":"Gardening has officially started and today students planted seeds in pots and in the AeroGardens! They were really excited to get their hands dirty and begin to grow greatness! This entire semester, students will enjoy the AeroGardens- so far we started growing some flowering variety in hopes we can see some progress before Valentine's Day, and then next they voted to start growing herbs! My goal for the class is for students to learn gardening basics and be able to enjoy their hard-earned gardening- by getting to eat what they grow!\r\n\r\nLast week, students received a class on hydroponics, so they will be expected to take care of the AeroGardens. This way, they really have an investment in their learning! I'm so excited for them to start to see their seeds grow! Your generous donation has allowed 67 students this term to create closed ecosystems for pond snails. Students created an ecosystem in a jar after researching the biological demands of a snail. After the jars were established the students tested to dissolved oxygen levels to determine if the ecosystem would support their snail. If it wasn't the students made adjustments before sealing the jar. The jars were then placed in front of the grow lights you donated. This is an ongoing lab that students will be exploring over the course of a month. The excitement and engagement the students experienced was wonderful. \r\n The grow lights will be used again with biology students when they research plant growth and homeostasis and the oxygen tests will be used again when we survey the water quality of a local stream. \r\n None of this would've been possible without your support. You helped provide some genuine learning experiences for these students. Many have never grown plants before and most have never seen a pond snails.","fullyFundedDate":1756760117240,"projectUrl":"project/allowing-students-to-experience-authenti/9658315/","projectTitle":"Allowing Students to Experience Authentic Environmental Science","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McCreery","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7505216"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_52916","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1189,"numTeachers":89,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":10,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":48.2,"schoolId":52916,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/davenport-community-school-district/north-high-school/52916"}
