Your support has allowed me to expand our classroom library with Between the World and Me, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and Into the Wild, giving students opportunities to explore compelling nonfiction from a variety of perspectives.\r\n\r\nThese books will be much more than reading assignments. In AP Language, students learn to examine how writers use language to shape ideas, influence audiences, and build arguments. Through our upcoming book clubs, students will analyze authors' rhetorical choices, evaluate evidence, consider different perspectives, and use what they read to develop their own arguments. Just as importantly, these texts will invite students to grapple with complex questions about identity, justice, ethics, personal responsibility, and the choices we make. Without this project being fully funded, my students wouldn't have the opportunity to read whole books. \r\n\r\nBoth books give students a chance to see rhetoric and argument in action outside of a textbook. In Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson blends legal case studies with personal narrative, so students learn to trace how a writer builds ethos (establishing credibility as a lawyer and advocate), uses pathos through individual stories of wrongfully condemned clients, and grounds every emotional appeal in hard evidence and data about the justice system. It's an ideal text for teaching argumentative structure and the difference between a claim that's merely persuasive and one that's actually supported.\r\n\r\nEducated offers a different but complementary skill set: students analyze memoir as a genre, examining how Tara Westover uses narrative structure, selective detail, and shifting perspective to build a case for her own transformation — skills that translate directly into their own personal essays and narrative writing. Together, the two books let us pair analytical, evidence-driven nonfiction with reflective, narrative-driven nonfiction, so students build both the rhetorical analysis skills the AP Lang exam requires and a richer sense of what nonfiction writing can do.\r\n\r\nMany in the world of secondary education have been trying to promote the teaching of excerpts instead of whole texts, often with the belief that, if students aren't going to read, give them something shorter that they are more likely to read. In my experience, however, that strategy has not produced results. Our students have \"Damp Box Sessions\" weekly to create the 50 damp boxes for our Ceramics Department, and have really grown from the process! The students are more aware of the health risks, they are more collaborative in the studio, and they are taking more ownership of the studio spaces because of this project. \r\n\r\nBecause the damp boxes are being used immediately, the impact has also been immediately felt and appreciated in our classrooms. The transition from using the bags with clay dust everywhere to using the damp boxes with minimal dust, our floors are now cleaner, the air is clear and cleaner, and works-in-progress are not drying out at such a quick rate that they break before being fired. This opportunity has provided our students with so much more confidence for our students who are learning how to work with clay for the first time.\r\n\r\nNow that our National Art Honor Society members have been able to create the damp boxes and peer-mentor this process, they have the knowledge to carry with them for the rest of their lives, on how to create a safer environment in the ceramics studio.
