Middle schoolers are always hungry and having a snack at hand allows them to be ready to learn. It also helps for those who missed breakfast and/or did not like the lunch they were provided that day. As we read, students practice important reading skills such as identifying character traits, making inferences, finding text evidence, summarizing, determining themes, and explaining how characters change throughout a story. The Post-it notes, bookmarks, and reading trackers help students slow down, think deeply about what they are reading, and keep track of their ideas.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and engaging experience. Students read independently, with partners, and together as a class. They use Post-it notes to mark important moments, make connections, ask questions, and record their thinking. Our reading trackers help students set goals and celebrate their progress, while bookmarks give them a place to record reminders and important ideas. Having a classroom set means that every student can follow along, participate in discussions, and feel like an important part of our reading community.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project is seeing students who may not always consider themselves \"readers\" become excited about the story. Students are eager to talk about the characters, share their predictions, and debate what they think might happen next. Some students especially enjoy connecting the characters' experiences to their own lives and friendships.
