Since receiving them, students have been choosing books about friendship, emotions, kindness, and handling difficult situations. We have had some wonderful conversations start simply because a student connected with something a character was experiencing.\r\n\r\nWhat has touched me most is hearing students say things like, \"I feel that way too,\" or recognizing that a character made a different choice when faced with a difficult situation. These moments give students a chance to talk about feelings and choices in a way that feels natural and safe.\r\n\r\nThe books are also giving students opportunities to slow down, reflect, and see that they are not alone in the things they may be feeling. Seeing information in color helps them make sense of complex ideas, remember what matters, and realize that taking time to organize their work actually makes learning feel possible. These habits become life skills: managing a household, planning schedules, staying focused at work, and tackling challenges with clarity instead of fear. \r\n\r\nMany of my students were hesitant at first. They were reluctant to study, unsure of themselves, and convinced the work would be too hard. But the moment they saw the colorful pens, mood pencils, and cute toppers, something shifted. I had been running into the problem of not having boards to play on when students had completed their work and wanted to do something better than scrolling through videos on their laptops. When I got the new boards and clocks, the students were as excited as I was to have the supplies they needed. I now have boards for all my students wanting to play, which gets more students interested in using their time in a thought-provoking way. \r\n I gauged interest by having a December chess tournament, where 21 students signed up and played during their lunchtime. This is from our pool of less than 100 students. We ran a double elimination bracket and the students really enjoyed pitting their brains against those of their classmates. A senior won, taking the pride and prize of a gift card home with him. Technically, he had finished all his classes the week before, but stuck around to finish the tournament. Now that the new semester has begun, I have instituted a chess club on Tuesdays during lunch. It is so great to see these students diving into a rigorous mental activity in this world that favors mindless nothing. If nothing else, I believe this chess has instilled an attitude that these students can do things they didn't think they could do. It is really great to see, and I can't wait to see this chess club continue to grow.","fullyFundedDate":1763247827432,"projectUrl":"project/help-students-get-excited-about-chess/9896272/","projectTitle":"Help Students Get Excited About Chess!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bobrow","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10350838"},{"teacherId":10177265,"projectId":9842896,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting this project.
