These texts help students practice core sociological skills: identifying patterns in behavior, analyzing institutions and social change, evaluating evidence, and asking deeper \"why\" questions about the world around them. Rather than memorizing terms, students are learning how to think critically, synthesize ideas, and connect individual experiences to larger social forces—what sociologists call \"peeling back the onion.\"\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students annotate, debate claims, track real-world examples, and challenge assumption, sometimes even their own. Discussions often spill beyond the page into conversations about technology, mental health, social norms, influence, and responsibility. These books have sparked some of the most thoughtful and respectful discussions I've seen, with students learning not just how to argue a point, but how to listen, reconsider, and refine their thinking.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who don't usually see themselves as \"readers\" have been especially engaged. Because these books speak directly to their lived experiences, students who are often quiet have found their voice, and others have taken genuine ownership of their learning. Your support didn't just put books in our classroom, it gave students tools to better understand themselves and the society they're growing up in. Thank you for helping make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1744222375087,"projectUrl":"project/peeling-back-the-onion-book-studies-in/9059807/","projectTitle":"Peeling Back the Onion: Book Studies in Sociology","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kennedy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6312128"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39492","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1672,"numTeachers":105,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":55.0,"schoolId":39492,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Natrona County High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Natrona County High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wyoming/natrona-county-school-district-1/natrona-co-high-school/39492"}
