The kiddos took home the stem kits and brought them back for the evening of Open House when we celebrated our \"Town of Teamwork\" and shared our success with families.\r\n\r\nThis project created excitement for the Cool Cats as they anticipated sharing their successes with their family. In addition to this, we were able to incorporate Social Studies standards by thinking about rules that would be applicable at all major buildings in a downtown area. We used our math skills to show our understanding of repeated addition as multiplication, and demonstrated our understanding of measurement in both centimeters and inches. We also referenced our shapes as rectangular prisms. \r\n\r\nIn addition to this the kids took such pride in what they had created and had an opportunity to work together, to compromise, and to find ways to work through their differences as they built their cities. The moment the books arrived, my students gathered around with wide eyes and excited whispers, eager to explore stories that reflected their own lives and introduced them to new perspectives. As we began reading together, I noticed meaningful connections being made—students proudly pointing out characters who looked like them or shared similar experiences, while others asked thoughtful questions and showed genuine curiosity about cultures and identities different from their own. These books have quickly become a cherished part of our daily routine, from read-alouds to independent reading time.\r\n\r\nOne especially powerful moment happened during a read-aloud when a student quietly shared, \"That character is like me.\" It opened the door for a beautiful class discussion about empathy, respect, and understanding one another. Since then, students have been more intentional with their words and actions, showing increased kindness and inclusion during both academic and social times. The books have not only supported literacy growth but have also strengthened our classroom community in ways that go far beyond academics.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we will continue using these books as part of our reading, writing, and social-emotional learning lessons. Students will be engaging in activities such as creating their own stories that reflect their identities, participating in partner discussions about themes of kindness, and exploring how we can make our classroom—and the world—a more inclusive place.
