We attend a small school in a suburb of Los Angeles County. Because we are a high achieving school, we don't always receive the same funding as other schools in our surrounding areas. We only have 5 iPads per class of 30 students. Given that, the third grade teachers have pooled their iPads together and share them between the 4 classes. That's 20 iPads for 120 students! We all love using technology, and with Common Core testing, my students must be computer proficient to successfully take the new standardized test. Even one iPad in our room on a permanent basis would help me give differentiated instruction while mirroring the iPad on a screen for the whole class to see. I could also use it for students to complete research projects on subjects such as the Solar System or Ecosystems; produce their own videos; use creative apps to learn their multiplication facts; create interactive books and read and record themselves...the list is endless.
Students today are craving more and more technology and unfortunately funding just can't keep up with the demand.
Even just ONE more iPad in my classroom would help me make learning more fun and hands on for my third graders. The world they are growing up in revolves around technology, and they are ready and able to take it on. As their teacher, I need to be ready and able to help prepare them for that world with the best possible tools at my disposal.
