My students were thrilled to welcome new Spanish titles into our classroom library. My students are bilingual learners, and having access to engaging books in Spanish has helped them build confidence and excitement around reading. Reading in our classroom looks very collaborative and interactive. Students often read independently, with partners, or in small groups. They discuss characters, themes and story elements. The new books have allowed students to practice important literacy skills like summarizing texts, identifying character traits, and analyzing themes in meaningful and engaging ways. \r\n\r\nSeveral students were especially excited to read Alas de fuego because they had already read parts of the series in English and were eager to experience the story in Spanish. It was wonderful to see students making connections between both languages. Another favorite has been Emmie es invisible, which has become a valuable mentor text during our realistic fiction unit. Students have been using the book to study how authors write about realistic situations. Instead of just looking at numbers, students are able to build and compare fractions using the pieces. They can see that 1/2 is the same as 2/4 or 4/8 by placing the pieces side by side. This hands-on experience has helped students make important connections and deepen their understanding.\r\n\r\nDuring math centers, students use the manipulatives to explore and solve problems together. These have quickly become a favorite part of our math time. Students are engaged, having conversations about their thinking, and supporting each other. I have also used the manipulatives during small group intervention to help students who need extra support.
