It is so nice to be able to hand a student a pencil or eraser, and they don't have to worry about getting in trouble for not having one. The materials funded — including raised beds, soil, seeds, grow lights, and gardening tools — transformed a corner of the classroom into a thriving mini garden.\r\n\r\nThis project empowered students to take ownership of their learning while reinforcing life science standards such as plant life cycles, photosynthesis, ecosystems, and environmental responsibility. Students tracked growth in science journals, made predictions, graphed data, and even wrote persuasive essays on sustainable gardening.\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, the garden fostered teamwork, patience, and a sense of pride. Many students who struggled to stay engaged in traditional lessons blossomed as they nurtured real plants from seed to harvest.\r\n\r\nBecause of DonorsChoose and its supporters, my class gained not only scientific knowledge, but a deeper appreciation for nature, nutrition, and the joy of learning by doing.","fullyFundedDate":1713798816992,"projectUrl":"project/5th-grade-green-thumbs/8324247/","projectTitle":"5th Grade Green Thumbs","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Patterson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8330225_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1701122290415","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8330225"},{"teacherId":977887,"projectId":8720346,"letterContent":"I have a discipline, reward ticket system in action in my classroom.
