They were so motivated to start using them. This is thanks to the variety of engaging, manipulable items (such as unique beads, small toys, and diverse nature items) allowed students to practice counting large sets in meaningful ways that go far beyond rote memorization. Students weren't just reciting numbers; they were actively making strategic decisions about how to group, organize, and keep track of their counts. This hands-on, self-directed exploration fostered a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts like cardinality (the total number in a set) and unitizing (grouping items into tens or fives), which are crucial foundational skills.\r\n\r\nThis project was recently implemented and having already a positive impact, and I am looking forward to use this to enhance my students' mathematical communication and problem-solving abilities. This materials will allow me to do so because when working collaboratively, students have to clearly articulate their counting strategies — whether it is counting by ones, twos, fives, or tens— and justify their reasoning to their partners and the class. This peer-to-peer interaction not only solidified their own understanding but also exposed them to multiple efficient ways of counting, naturally leading to discussions about the relationship between addition and multiplication. The project transformed counting from a solitary, mechanical task into a rich, collaborative mathematical investigation, demonstrating a clear, positive trajectory in their numerical fluency and confidence that wouldn't have been possible with standard, limited classroom resources.","fullyFundedDate":1746660800889,"projectUrl":"project/counting-is-fun-developing-number-sense/9302769/","projectTitle":"Counting Is Fun: Developing Number Sense Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Vega","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8932337"},{"teacherId":9216120,"projectId":9624965,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous donation, our music classroom is now filled with even more joyful sound! With your help, we didn't just teach history — we lived it.\r\n\r\n🌍 What Happened:\r\nStudents explored ancient cultures through costumes, interactive stations, artifact replicas, and storytelling. Each group \"traveled\" to a different civilization, where they decoded hieroglyphics, built clay tablets, designed laurel wreaths, and presented their findings as museum guides to peers, staff, and families.\r\n\r\n👀 Student Reactions:\r\nThe excitement was real! One student said, \"I didn't know learning could feel like a real adventure.\" Another whispered during the Egyptian exhibit, \"I feel like I'm actually there!\" Their joy and engagement were a powerful reminder of how immersive learning creates lasting memories.\r\n\r\n📸 A Highlight Moment:\r\nDuring our museum showcase, students confidently led guests through each display, explaining cultural practices, inventions, and beliefs. One parent shared, \"I was amazed at how much my child knew—and how proud they were to share it.\"\r\n\r\n📚 What's Next:\r\nInspired by this expedition, students are now writing fictional diary entries as if they were children living in ancient times. They're applying both historical knowledge and creative thinking to imagine daily life in different eras—blending literacy, empathy, and critical thinking.\r\n\r\nYour generosity made this rich experience possible. They dressed in themed costumes, crafted artifacts like clay tablets and laurel wreaths, and presented what they had learned as museum docents to fellow students and families. It was not only educational, but empowering—students took ownership of their learning in a completely new way.\r\n\r\n🎭 A Favorite Moment:\r\nOne highlight was when students reenacted an Ancient Greek debate. With costumes, scrolls, and even makeshift togas, they argued philosophical ideas and laws of the time. A parent who attended said, \"I've never seen my child so confident and excited to talk about history!\"\r\n\r\n📚 Student Reactions:\r\nFrom gasps while unrolling their papyrus scrolls to giggles during hieroglyphic decoding challenges, our kids were all in. Many said this was their favorite unit of the year, and several asked if they could create a \"new museum\" for other topics.\r\n\r\n🔜 What's Next:\r\nWe're now building on this momentum with writing projects where students create fictional stories set in ancient times.
