Many of them walked into the classroom wide-eyed, immediately gravitating toward the sensory tiles, crash pad, swings, and calming tent. Several students who typically struggle with transitions or emotional regulation asked if they could \"go calm their bodies\" using the new space. It was powerful to watch students independently recognize what they needed and use the tools appropriately. One student who often becomes overwhelmed during academic tasks now regularly takes a short movement break in the hammock swing and is able to return to class ready to work. Another student who previously struggled during unstructured times now uses the sensory tent and tactile tools to regulate before rejoining peers.\r\n\r\nWe use the sensory room every single day. Students use the crash pad and movement equipment during scheduled sensory breaks, the liquid floor tiles and sensory mats during movement activities, and the calming lights and soft seating during regulation time or independent work. The sensory bins, kinetic sand, putty, and fine motor tools have become part of both our regulation routines and classroom learning centers. Even the snack and reward items have helped us reinforce positive behavior and celebrate student growth in meaningful ways. These resources have transformed an empty corner of our classroom into a safe and supportive environment where students can reset, recharge, and build self-regulation skills that help them access learning.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest next steps for my students is learning how to independently identify their sensory and emotional needs. We are continuing to work on self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and using calming strategies before behaviors escalate. The sensory space has opened the door for important conversations about coping skills, body regulation, and learning strategies. My students now see regulation tools not as \"toys,\" but as supports that help them succeed in school and in life.
