It felt like Christmas morning on the day I received the books. I am a Kindergarten teacher, therefore I am usually a child's first formal stepping stone in the long journey of education. This means I am supplying students with the foundational skills needed to be strong successful reader. The books you supplied my classroom give me resources to make sure my students are able to practice the skills I teach them in a real concrete way. Are you wondering exactly what I mean? Let me break down a lesson I would teach my students and how the books are helpful and definitely needed. \r\n\r\nLet's say I am teaching my students a sound that is commonly found in words we read. The sound is created by the letters CK. When we see these 2 letters together we call it a digraph. It makes the /k/ sound like in words back, slack, shack, etc. You know this because you are a reader now. Students new to reading do not, so I explicitly teach it. We practice the sound, learn a chant with the sound, and learn the rule of when and how to use this sound when reading and writing (spelling). We practice spelling with the digraph in isolation. These are all great great steps, but it is not enough until you are forced to APPLY the skill in a real world situation. This helps to really see if the knowledge learned can go through the process our brain naturally does to read and apply it while reading a book. The books you bought help me to \"see\" this. I gather students together in a small group according to their academic level and give them an unfamiliar book (the one you bought) and see if they can read the story and what they do when they get to a word with the spelling pattern learned, digraph -CK. In the pictures you can see how I am working with a small group of students reading one of the books and watching and listening how they apply the skill explicitly taught to them. They read and reread the book aloud in a whisper voice to build reading fluency. I listen and observe the \"process\". As my students begin seeing their own success as readers they are so excited about themselves and about their learning. My students just love books now and love to read to me all the time.
