As a speech language pathologist I have used these fun, colorful books to teach vocabulary and sentence formation skills to my young students who struggle with communication. Some are low or completely nonverbal so the outrageous concept of the old lady swallowing a frog or a cow really draws them in and engages their imagination. The beautiful illustrations hold their attention. The simple and repetitive sentences lets them hear the structures I want them to learn over and over again. Research has shown that children need to hear a word or a phrase 5-20 times before they learn it. By the end of the second reading my kids are just starting to repeat, \"I don't know why she swallowed....\", which is so thrilling to hear.\r\n When I use these books we always do a retell on the second round using my \"Old Lady\" doll. I create small images of the targeted vocabulary (rake, sunshine, seeds etc) using the strong colored card stock paper that was part of this project. Each child is encouraged to take a turn to select the next item and command, \"Open up old lady. Swallow the sunlight\". They then feed her the word and squeal as they try to avoid being bitten. So much fun! These books also help teach the concept of \"why\". She swallowed the raindrops to water the seeds. She swallowed the sunlight to dry up the rain. So important in early language acquisition.\r\n Finally, we will go to small groups and do various versions of story sequencing activities, another important language skill. I again incorporate the beautiful card stock in this activity. The students love creating their own artwork and will have something tangible to take home and practice their words and phrases with family members. It is such an engaging and effective method for teaching language and I am thankful for the whole new library of Old Lady books that will serve my special students for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1739940713101,"projectUrl":"project/language-learning-with-the-old-lady-who/9119898/","projectTitle":"Language Learning with the Old Lady Who Swallowed Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haggerty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7191148_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1644447170295","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7191148"},{"teacherId":9926485,"projectId":9119111,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation. We have enjoyed everything in this project. The students have grown socially and mentally. Dinosaurs are always a part of pre-k classrooms, adding the snap dinosaurs and the take apart dinosaurs has brought the dinosaur fun to a whole new level. The students are making crazy looking dinosaurs. They have increased their fine motor skills with snaps and the screw driver. They are learning to build and where to put the pieces. We have had so many dinosaur adventures. \r\n\r\nWe have learned colors, numbers and letters using the picnic baskets, acorns and light table items. The picnic baskets and acorns have also helped with fine motor skills (opening and closing), matching and sorting. The light table pieces have helped with sorting, identifying, and patterns. And we get to play with the items using light. It is so cool. One item the Coogam puzzle is fun to take apart, make designs with the pieces and then watch the adults struggle to get it back together. We have used the magnetic building blocks to create patterns, towers, and buildings. We will build to see how tall we can get it before it falls, these blocks are great for tiny hands building tall towers, since they are magnetic they don't move when placing the next block.\r\n\r\nLastly, we have enjoyed the work bench and all the tools. We love to use the hammer on our blue block and tees. We even take turns with peers. The work bench is so fun, the students are just figuring out how to build things with the nuts and bolts. \r\n\r\nAll these items have helped provide a new classroom with fun and educational materials.
