They were especially excited to dive into their activities after a mid-day snack, which sparked a renewed enthusiasm for exploration and creativity.\r\n\r\nThe joy on my students' faces when they first encountered the new materials was truly heartwarming. They jumped right in, building new and complex structures, and discovering their capabilities in ways I hadn't anticipated. Additionally, the chair pockets have greatly improved their organizational skills. Before, students frequently lost their computer cards, necessitating replacements for just about everyone. Now, only two students needed replacements, allowing for faster transitions and maximizing our learning time. It's wonderful to see them take ownership of their organization, which has also reduced overcrowding and wait times for materials.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are excited to continue integrating these resources into our current lessons. Sharing and collaborating an important skills for all children to learn, and when they are given different tools to do so, they better exercise these skills. \r\nThe Legos and other STEAM materials were a wonderful way to motivate students to practice sharing and collaborating. One challenge for many people, yes, people, even adults, is sharing! While utilizing the materials from this project, students were required to share and collaborate due to class rules and to have fun. Students did not want to build by themselves, and they often invited students to play with them who they might not always think of including. It was wonderful to see students working together and sharing. They were using kind language to share pieces and collaborate on what to build. Reading is such a key part of not only learning but also identity, and it really has made such a difference that my class now has books that they not only love but also feel represented by. \r\n\r\nA big focus for this inclusive classroom library collection was to have books that represent the LGBTQ+ community, both in fiction and nonfiction ways. I have many students in my class who are part of this wonderful community, and I wanted them to have books in their hands that show that same journey in others. What I also found really incredible was that a lot of students who are not part of the LGBTQ+ community gravitated to these books and have quickly become strong allies. \r\n\r\nI also focused on having a variety of texts that use graphic novel formatting. Many of my students have unique needs and learning abilities, and reading a variety of books that come with pictures helps boost their comprehension and their love of reading. Some of my students who truly took no interest in reading because of the struggles they had with it are now the first to pick up a book. \r\n\r\nWith my group's newfound interest in reading, we actually did a class reading challenge- 500 minutes of uninterrupted reading in our classroom altogether. And not only did we reach our goal, we are now working on an extra 200 minute reading goal!
