Your contribution means more than you know. Because of you, our scholars—many navigating trauma, housing insecurity, and unique learning needs—now have a therapeutic, empowering outlet where they can express themselves, build confidence, and shine. This dance program is a new venture for our young people, many of whom have been conditioned to give up because too many schools and systems have given up on them in the past.\r\n\r\nAt my LEA, we have 52 girls—less than half of our student population of 133—yet they account for 73% of our behavioral incidents and lose significant instructional time. Our Out of School Time programming is embedded into the school day, requiring all students to participate in both an academic and a gross motor activity. I chose to offer dance, not only because I teach for Parks and Recreation, but also because I personally needed the outlet while navigating my son's medical decline.\r\n\r\nWith limited space, I began with 15 girls. For many of them, this was the first time they had something they felt good at—the first time they could simply \"be\" instead of merely exist. Almost immediately, their behavioral incidents began to decline. Their self-love, self-advocacy, and self-efficacy grew as they experienced success on their own terms. These were girls who often fought one another, yet they put their differences aside while dancing. That unity followed them back into the classroom: their grades rose, their confidence returned, and for the first time in a long time, they felt hopeful.\r\n\r\nBecause of this progress, I launched an expanded program outside of the OST window, centered on restorative justice and ballet to reinforce the meditative practices taught in our Dialectical Behavior Therapy curriculum. Out of 52 girls, 43 now participate. The impact has been profound—our school culture is shifting, and incidents of fighting and bullying have dramatically decreased.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful moments of this journey was our participation in the MLK Day Parade. Our girls had a phenomenal time—convening with other dance lines, connecting with city-based organizations, and experiencing what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. They also had the opportunity to meet local policymakers, including DC Councilmembers, delegates, ANC commissioners, mayoral candidates, and more. This single event sparked something incredible: many of our dancers have since stepped into advocacy spaces, including the DC Council's Committee of the Whole, using their voices to speak on issues that impact their education and their futures.\r\n\r\nThis inaugural experience for our budding team has not only boosted their confidence but also expanded their vision of what's possible—both within the art of dance and beyond it. Thanks to so many of you, the world now feels wider, brighter, and full of opportunity.\r\n\r\nYour kindness is helping our students step into their first performance with pride, purpose, and joy. The sense of belonging they feel—and will continue to feel as they not only move as a unit but look like one—combined with their opportunity to be seen as Black and Brown girls who are worthy, capable, and brilliant, is a gift they will carry for life.\r\n\r\nWe are truly grateful for your belief in them and in the power of dance to transform lives.\r\n\r\nWith deep appreciation,","fullyFundedDate":1765827590578,"projectUrl":"project/mapcs-unleashed-takes-on-the-historic-ml/9899711/","projectTitle":"MAPCS Unleashed Takes on the Historic MLK Day Parade!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Turner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8106562_orig.jpg?crop=1021,1021,x0,y51&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764646802252","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8106562"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_109372","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":127,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":97,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":45.5,"schoolId":109372,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Monument Academy Public Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Monument Academy Public Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/district-of-columbia/district-of-columbia-public-charter-school-board/monument-academy-public-charter-school/109372"}
