Depending on the size of the district a teacher calls home, they may or may not have adequate resources to go the extra mile for their students, or at least in a way that they deem necessary. I happen to have only taught in small rural schools, and although I have been blessed to get an annual budget and could grab up essential supplies for my classes, I haven't been able to provide any extras to really take my students' experience to the next level. That is, until I took a chance on Donors Choose and you all took a chance on me! \r\n\r\nWith Donors Choose, I was able to submit a project that encompassed a wide variety of materials to create an awesome experience for my students AND make their day through some fun surprises! \r\n\r\nThe LEGO Poinsettia was a super fun and collaborative activity that my Spanish Club students put together and now that will be on display and become a part of the Legend of the Poinsettia every year. I think they found out that putting together a LEGO kit as a team was way more challenging than they originally thought it would be! Once that was on display, it was used as an example for my Spanish students as they created a couple varieties of paper poinsettias using the Medium Weight construction paper we received as a part of the project. Both of these projects sparked curiosity in all Hispanic holidays we have been discussing since, and as a result, some students have shared what they are learning with family and friends!\r\n\r\nMy middle school students are currently in the process of learning numbers 0-100 and basic math in Spanish and have had the opportunity to use the Cactus counters to help them complete an assignment.\r\n \r\nThere are so many other items that were a part of the project that will still get put into play before the end of this school year, and I can't wait to share them with my students! I am most excited to work with my Spanish 3 students using the Air Dry Clay and tools to help them recreate architectural marvels of the Hispanic World, like the Aqueduct of Segovia. With my Spanish 1 students, they will be creating their own personalized Alebrije using the Wiggly Eyes and the Construction paper after watching the Netflix movie Chupa about the Chupacabras. \r\n\r\nBecause I teach an encore course, I like to be able to make all aspects of the class fun and a little bit \"extra\" for my high school and middle school students. Some of that fun comes in the form of water bottle stickers for landing at the top of the Duolingo class leaderboard, and some come through birthday celebrations. I like to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish and then the birthday student gets a Cactus Shaped Ballpoint Pen. For many of my students, these small tokens may be the only gift they receive and I want to be sure that it is as special as possible. \r\n\r\nOverall, the experience of receiving and using materials from the generous donors from Donors Choose has truly been uplifting for me and I will continue to share my colleagues' projects so they too can enrich their students' learning experience. I am looking forward to seeking out another project this fall that will focus on community engagement.
