Many of our students are still developing early reading and writing skills, so having a laptop that allows us to project stories and lessons on the wall has made learning more visual, accessible, and engaging for everyone.\r\n\r\nWith the laptop, we project short stories, videos, and social-emotional lessons for the whole class. Students enjoy watching characters face challenges, talk about feelings, and make choices that show courage, gratitude, and kindness. Seeing these stories on a big screen helps them follow along, talk about what the characters might be feeling, and connect the lessons to their own experiences.\r\n\r\nOne example of meaningful learning happened during our Veterans Day celebration. We used the laptop to project a video about the sacrifices veterans make and how they serve our country. After watching, students created \"Thank You Veterans\" messages and drawings, and made hats and a banner to display around school. Many students shared that they wanted veterans to feel appreciated and happy, which reflects the compassion-in-action goals of our SEL program.\r\n\r\nAnother powerful moment occurred during our \"Trick or Treat Freedom Donuts\" activity. After watching a projected story about compassion and sacrifice, students received small treats to share. When one student realized there weren't enough treats for everyone, she quietly handed her treat to a classmate who didn't receive one. When asked why she gave hers away, she simply said, \"Kindness starts in sharing.\" This unprompted act of empathy shows how students are internalizing and applying what they learn from the stories we share using the laptop.\r\n\r\nThe technology has also supported academic growth in meaningful ways. Today, because the students have been learning about pronouns, our second graders were able to write and illustrate their own book that is now ready to publish. The lessons we projected helped them understand how pronouns are used to talk about themselves and others, and they applied that learning in creative writing. Students were excited to become \"authors\" and loved seeing their work come to life as a real book.\r\n\r\nThe laptop has been especially impactful for students who struggle with attention, language, or transitioning between tasks. Having stories projected on the wall keeps them engaged visually and helps them follow along without feeling overwhelmed by text on a small screen. It also creates shared experiences that lead to rich discussions, writing, and creative projects.\r\n\r\nWhat excites our students most is being able to create something that others can see and feel. Whether making kindness cards, drawings, or posters, they are eager to take what they see on the screen and turn it into real actions that lift others up. They are beginning to understand that compassion isn't just about feeling it is about doing.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped our students become more confident, empathetic, and connected to their school community.
