One meaningful moment was during our reading block when students gathered on the new library rug and chose Spanish texts that truly matched their reading levels. Students were eagerly discussing characters, making predictions, and sharing connections—all in Spanish. It has transformed our reading time into a calm, engaging, and joyful experience.\r\n\r\nTheir reactions were priceless. The students were excited to see books that felt \"just right\" for them—books with richer vocabulary, engaging stories, and authentic Spanish language. Several students immediately commented that the books were more interesting and looked like ones they would choose on their own. The rug also made them feel like they had a special, welcoming space just for reading.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include using these books for deeper comprehension work, such as identifying themes, practicing written responses in Spanish, and participating in small-group discussions. Students will also begin book talks and reading reflections to build confidence as bilingual readers. These resources are helping them grow not only in reading skills, but also in their love for reading and pride in learning in Spanish.","fullyFundedDate":1760670768394,"projectUrl":"project/building-strong-readers-spanish-opportu/9771468/","projectTitle":"Building Strong Readers: Spanish Opportunities for Bilingual Scholars","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Alicea","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp781769_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1453140141913","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/cmanzano"},{"teacherId":2763930,"projectId":9839267,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our project and providing us with comfortable, durable stools to use during small group instruction. Early chapter books serve as a vital bridge in the classroom, helping kids transition from simple decoding to advanced reading comprehension. Unlike shorter picture books, chapter books introduce longer, more complex narratives that require students to build reading stamina and maintain focus over several sittings. This structure forces the brain to actively monitor the plot, remember details from previous chapters, and understand cause-and-effect relationships. Furthermore, these books introduce richer vocabulary and sophisticated sentence structures that are rarely used in everyday conversation, providing the linguistic foundation needed to interpret and analyze more difficult academic texts.\r\nBeyond technical literacy, books with deep lessons and morals are powerful tools for character building and emotional intelligence. When my students read about characters facing ethical dilemmas—such as choosing between honesty and peer pressure— they experience their struggles through \"narrative transportation,\" which allows them to practice empathy in a safe, imaginative space. These stories provide a \"common language\" in the classroom to discuss complex social skills like cooperation, perseverance, and conflict resolution. By witnessing the consequences of a character's choices, the kids internalize values like kindness and responsibility more effectively than through a standard lecture, ultimately shaping how they interact with each other in real-world situations.\r\nMy students enjoy the titles you made possible during the whole-group lessons as well as during their 30-minute independent reading.
