Many students who were previously hesitant readers are now eager to participate in class conversations about the characters, conflicts, and themes of identity, courage, conformity, and choice.\r\n\r\nAs we read Divergent, students are building important literacy skills such as analyzing character development, identifying themes, citing textual evidence, and making connections between literature and the real world. The novel has also provided opportunities for students to think critically about society, leadership, and individuality through the lens of dystopian literature. In our classroom, reading looks interactive and collaborative—students annotate passages, participate in small-group discussions, respond to writing prompts, and engage in activities that encourage both critical thinking and creativity.\r\n\r\nSeveral students in particular have become deeply invested in the story and its characters. Some students who rarely volunteered earlier in the year are now actively sharing predictions and insights during discussions. Students compare how Twain uses humor and satire to comment on society with how Steinbeck employs symbolism and restraint to explore power, injustice, and morality. Through discussion and writing, they learn that literature can ask hard questions without providing easy answers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students annotate their own books, pause to discuss pivotal moments, and regularly return to passages to support their ideas with evidence. Because every student has a physical copy, reading feels personal, students highlight, reread, and mark passages that resonate with them.\r\n\r\nSome of my most reluctant readers have been especially engaged. Through our study, students have practiced advanced literacy skills like analyzing character motivation, identifying historical context, and connecting themes of family, courage, and social justice to their own lives. The emotional depth and historical grounding of the story have helped them build empathy and a deeper understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, while the humor and heart of the Watson family have kept them laughing, reflecting, and asking thoughtful questions.\r\n\r\nReading The Watsons Go to Birmingham — 1963 has become a shared experience that unites our classroom community. Every student has their own copy, which means we can annotate together, revisit key passages, and have meaningful, text-based discussions. During reading time, students are fully immersed — heads bent over their books, debating Byron's choices, or wondering how they might have acted in Kenny's place. The story's blend of historical realism and relatable family moments makes it the perfect text to stretch their comprehension and critical thinking skills while keeping their curiosity alive.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful outcomes has been watching reluctant readers light up with interest. Several students who once hesitated to read aloud now eagerly volunteer to voice different characters, and others have shared how much they relate to the Watson siblings' family dynamics.
