Innovation is not solely born from equations and formulas; it's also informed through creative problem-solving and thinking outside the box—skills taught in the art classroom. Your help with material and art supplies for my classroom has allowed my students to embrace a unique method in art for them to respond to ways they perceive, understand, and respond to the things around us, amplifying their human experience.\r\n Because of you, we are/were able to show students through art, how to bridge the gap between science and art. Our first week we spent going over machines, cogs, wheels and bases. Students started off by creating a 1 cog machine using cardboard and other materials. The second machine they made included wire, unbends, lots of you-tube how to videos, as it took multiple attempts and reinforcing wire and beads to move without breaking the handles or bending. This re-working and multiple attempts allowed students to create automata that had a minimum of 4 cogs or bends, 3 motions and sculptured characters and design on top that move that took a few days to design and weeks to build\r\n The second week in the art room, is when I saw students fully engage and concentrate on creating art with a message or more personal to them. We started with a final design and create the box, the bends using wire and bead (internally) and finalized (painted)once movements were fluid and nothing was stopping or breakings. The final boxes were then decorated with choices of papers and or/ paint and decorated. \r\n Your support has allowed me to continue to show my students different sculptural processes. I was thrilled to be able to supply my students with quality art materials that were used to expand their creativity and wonder, teach and anchor skills and cross-curricular concepts, and provide magical hands-on learning experiences for the students and makes a tangible difference in our community here at MHS.\r\nI am thrilled to have you as part of our community and see the ongoing impact of your gift. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity and for joining us in our mission. \r\nWith gratitude,\r\nMelissa Taylor-Hicks\r\nArt Instructor \r\nMiddleburg High School","fullyFundedDate":1768919798795,"projectUrl":"project/grants-for-great-ideas-odd-magic-of-liv/9992195/","projectTitle":"Grants for Great Ideas: Odd Magic of Living Machines Automana","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor-Hicks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10398897_orig.jpg?crop=204,204,x0,y22&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767883916569","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10398897"},{"teacherId":10398897,"projectId":9991672,"letterContent":"April 6, 20206\r\n\r\n On behalf of Middleburg High School, I am writing to express our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation of Cyanotype Materials and Lights received this past year. Innovation is not solely born from equations and formulas; it's also informed through creative problem-solving and thinking outside the box—skills taught in the art classroom. You know that in regards to education, it's not about choosing between science, math, or art; it's about fostering well-rounded individuals who can thrive in a complex world. Our world is often dominated by words, but you remind us of the profound power art has to transcend language. Your help with material and art supplies for my classroom has allowed my students to embrace a unique method in art for them to respond to ways they perceive, understand, and respond to the things around us, amplifying their human experience.\r\n Because of you, we are/were able to show students through art, how to bridge the gap between science and art. Our first week with the cyanotype materials we focused on the history and also making exposure with pre-made papers and materials. Students started off using found objects: by placing them on top of the paper and creating an exposure under UV lights students created an image. Students then drew on mylar paper in black ink and created negatives that were also exposed under UV lights created a blueprint drawing. Unfortunately, weather over the course of the 2 weeks did not contribute for us to go outside and be in nature, so we utilized the UV lights daily.\r\n The second week in the art room, is when I saw students fully engage and concentrate on creating art with a message or more personal to them. We started by painting chemistry upon multiple watercolor paper and had to dry it overnight (I had already mixed the chemistry as it sits for 24 hours first). Once dry they were able to use their own materials and findings to create larger exposures and images. They created 6, 9\" x 12\" images. From these images, students then took their cyanotypes-as some exposures created color only- and combined them with magazine images to create collages in which they could then paint and draw back into. Students cut, tore, wove, glues, colored and painted cyanotypes into a new composition and final artwork.\r\n Your support has allowed me to continue to show alternative art making processes to my students as I am a fan of upcycling and unique treatments in visual arts. I am thrilled to be able to supply my students with quality art materials that are used to expand their creativity and wonder, teach and anchor skills and cross-curricular concepts, and provide magical hands-on learning experiences for the children and makes a tangible difference in our community here at MHS.\r\nI am thrilled to have you as part of our community and see the ongoing impact of your gift. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity and for joining us in our mission. \r\nWith gratitude,\r\nMelissa Taylor-Hicks\r\nArt Instructor \r\nMiddleburg High School","fullyFundedDate":1768409186549,"projectUrl":"project/grants-for-great-ideas-cyanotypes-sun/9991672/","projectTitle":"Grants for Great Ideas: Cyanotypes: Sun Printing with Vintage Vibes.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Taylor-Hicks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10398897_orig.jpg?crop=204,204,x0,y22&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767883916569","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10398897"},{"teacherId":9436318,"projectId":9983140,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support in helping us purchase E-reader pens for our students.
