They were eager to see the packages that were sent to us and quickly wanted to assemble them, especially the new camp stoves. Their favorite garden activity is, undoubtedly, the days that we get to cook. It was such a great feeling being able to offer this new cohort of students new and functional camp stoves. So far, we have made bruschetta using the cherry tomatoes and basil from our garden, burritos using vegetables from the garden to make a salsa, and spaghetti using fresh vegetables that we grew. \r\n\r\nBeing able to cook together has not only allowed them to improve their cooking skills, but has also strengthened their connection to food and each other. It is a time that allows us to talk and get to know more about each other, building mutual respect and care. Additionally, they learn to problem solve and practice resourcefulness. It gives many of them an opportunity to practice creativity when cooking that many of our students would otherwise not be able to do. Last but not least, they get to have full bellies on the days that we cook and commune together over a meal that we all worked collectively to cook. \r\n\r\nThe brooms that we received have been a great way to keep our garden looking clean. Many students from the school that are not a part of the internship often ask us how they can help. The broom and loppers allow us to give those students an activity that makes it easy for them to help out and preserve the beauty of the garden. \r\n\r\nI want to once again express how much this has helped us continue to not only offer the garden-to-table aspect of our internship, but to also be able to include other students in the process of maintaining the garden.","fullyFundedDate":1757533611345,"projectUrl":"project/garden-to-table-cooking/9661674/","projectTitle":"Garden-to-Table Cooking","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ash","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10230432_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y897&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756417606163","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10230432"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_28360","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":237,"numTeachers":11,"percentFrplEligible":94,"percentAsian":8,"percentBlack":23,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":53,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.3,"schoolId":28360,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Metwest High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Metwest High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/oakland-unified-school-district/metwest-high-school/28360"}
