The narrative helps students connect scientific ideas to real-world applications, including medical advances, bioethics, and the historical context of tissue research. By learning Henrietta Lacks' story alongside the science of HeLa cells, students gain a deeper appreciation for how scientific discoveries are made and the ethical responsibilities that accompany them. This interdisciplinary approach helps students see biology not just as abstract content but as something deeply tied to people's lives, history, and justice.\r\nUsing a nonfiction text in a science classroom also strengthens students' literacy skills in ways that directly support their English coursework. The book exposes students to complex vocabulary, scientific explanations, and narrative nonfiction structures, all of which build reading stamina and critical thinking. Students practice evaluating ethical arguments and synthesizing information from multiple sources—skills that are emphasized in English Language Arts standards. By integrating this text into biology, students learn to read scientific material more confidently while also developing empathy, perspective-taking, and the ability to critically examine how race, class, and ethics intersect with science. This dual focus makes the text a powerful tool for supporting both scientific understanding and academic literacy.","fullyFundedDate":1764049962764,"projectUrl":"project/the-immortal-life-of-henrietta-lacks-cro/9922357/","projectTitle":"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Cross Curricular Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Morford-Graziano","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1833638_orig.png?crop=1123,1124,x0,y52&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727377649368","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1833638"},{"teacherId":8430227,"projectId":9603223,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations.
