In the process, they had to think beyond a two-dimensional drawing -- they considered structure and form, learned basic sewing techniques, and persevered through the challenges of physically constructing an object they had conceptualized. I was delighted that there was total buy-in, especially from the boys!\r\n\r\nMy 7th graders completed a unit on proportion, and the lovely assortment of colored pencils you gave us allowed them to experiment with a variety of values to create the illusion of form (see mannequin drawings).\r\n\r\nMy 6th graders explored the art and design traditions of the Middle East and then used the squeegees you gave use to create their own architectural designs. The unusual tools encouraged students to approach paint in new way. They experimented with movement, pressure, layering, and pattern while making connections between their own creative work and artistic traditions from another part of the world.\r\n\r\nExperiences like these give students more than a finished artwork to take home. They tried things unfamiliar and through that built confidence. They learned that there is rarely just one way to solve a creative problem, and that mistakes and experimentation are an integral part of the process. The students have not had the opportunity to make these things when I have taught this unit before, so I am very excited. \r\n\r\nI have used the laminating sheets to laminate items for science (those will be used for years to come). The map is currently being used in geography and to teach ordinal direction. The popsicle sticks are being using for calling on students to answer questions. \r\n\r\nI am truly grateful for this amazing donation. I have 40 students altogether, and I have students store their in-class materials here. My students like the thought of having their own personal mailbox. They receive mail from other students, and they store their ELA and Social Studies copy books (composition books that hold a record of their learning for the year) in their mailboxes. \r\n\r\nYou also contributed some of the best books to help children understand the content in our curriculum even more. Students are learning about their community: what makes up a community, people who work in a community, services that are provided in a community, and how to be a good citizen in a community. \"Be a Good Citizen: Children's Book about Laws, Rights, and Responsibilities for Kids\" and \"I am a Good Citizen\" are books we have read in class and have used it in discussion for our monthly core virtues of respect and responsibility and understanding that they are a part of our school community. I am attaching pics of these two books along with what the students are gluing into their Social Studies copy books. \r\n\r\nAnother book you contributed that has become a classic in our classroom is \"Oh Say Can You Seed? All About Flowering Plants.\"This fun nonfiction Dr. Seuss book has helped develop students' understanding of plant structures, plant functions, and how plants interact with the environment to meet their needs. After reading this book, students used the information to dissect seeds and find the embryo, cotyledon, and seed coat. They also developed a model that mimics the function of an animal pollinating plants. The colored pencils, watercolor brush pens, paint brushes, glue, and magnetic design materials have already begun finding their way into our STEAM challenges.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources to design, build, create, and problem solve. Students are learning that STEAM isn't always about following a set of directions and ending up with the same finished product. Sometimes the best part is starting with an idea, discovering that it doesn't work quite the way you imagined, and then figuring out what to try next. The new materials give students more ways to communicate their ideas and make their thinking visible.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments is watching students who may initially say, \"I don't know what to make,\" become completely absorbed in creating. Give them a few materials and a little freedom, and suddenly they are designing, experimenting, collaborating, and proudly showing their classmates what they have made. Those are the moments that remind me why hands on learning matters so much.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building on that creativity through new design and engineering challenges. Students will use their materials to sketch ideas, build prototypes, test their designs, make changes, and try again. They will be learning that there isn't always one right answer and that sometimes the most interesting solutions are the ones we discover when we are willing to color outside the lines.\r\n\r\nThank you for making that possible. They are in place in our music classroom, where I teach groups of middle schoolers to play piano, learn music theory, perform, etc. Thank you so much.\r\n\r\nI am currently teaching our 7th graders--many of whom were in my 6th grade class last year. Those students remember last semester, when I told them that someone had donated two more keyboards for us to use this year, and their reactions were mixed with surprise and excitement. When coming into the class this year, and seeing the new ones, they all wanted turns to play the new ones (they do sound so much better!). Each student will have the opportunity to play on the new keyboards, as we will perform in class each month on one of those, and also will be using one for our school's end of the semester Arts and Music Festival, where our piano students will have the opportunity to perform in front of the school and parents.\r\n\r\nHaving keyboards for each of the students will give them a sense of privacy, as they learn and work through new pieces of music, learn scales and chords, and, toward the end of the semester, compose measures of music on their own. The ownership each student has of the care of a keyboard includes making sure nothing that could damage it is nearby (water bottles, eraser leavings, gum, small coins, etc.), covering it carefully to keep dust off, and keeping it clean in general, is a responsibility that each takes seriously. The elementary classes also meet in this music room, and from time to time, also use the keyboards, sometimes leaving them a bit askew.
