I requested a lot of books for this project that I am using to support my reluctant readers. I received several graphic novels that are fiction and non-fiction to help grab my students attention in a fun and different way. I also LOVE using read aloud picture books, even in fifth grade, and \"The Magical Yet\" has been one of my students favorites this year!\r\n\r\nIn addition to books, I requested several hands on items like the modeling clay and wood and metal puzzles that we use for Mindful Monday. On Monday mornings, my students enter the classroom and do something to promote mindfulness in some way. I believe that especially at the start of the week, having a non-technology active yet quiet activity to focus on sets students up for success! For many students who face challenges with language processing, the ability to respond to WH-questions—such as \"who,\" \"what,\" \"where,\" \"when,\" \"why,\" and \"how\"—is fundamental for both academic success and social communication. The bingo game provides a fun way to help students strengthen these important comprehension skills. \r\n\r\nThe WH-question bingo comprehension game is specifically designed to provide structured, repetitive practice in a fun, low-stress environment. The structured nature of the game also allows for incremental steps in language development. For example, students might begin with simpler questions like \"What do you do with crayons?\" and gradually progress to more complex questions like \"Why do you use an umbrella?\" As they advance through different levels, students are gently pushed to extend their thinking and verbal skills.\r\n\r\nFurthermore, a game-based approach supports student engagement and motivation. For children with language disorders, traditional methods of instruction can often feel monotonous or frustrating. By incorporating games, I am able to keep students motivated to participate during small group intervention. The reward system in many games, whether through points, praise, or progressing to the next level, can serve as powerful incentives, providing positive reinforcement for effort and progress. This in turn builds self-esteem and encourages students to continue practicing their verbal comprehension skills.\r\n\r\nFinally, the social benefits of the WH-question bingo comprehension game should not be overlooked. This game is frequently played in a small group during speech-language intervention. As students engage with one another, they not only practice verbal responses to WH-questions but also learn valuable social cues and conversational skills. This can be especially beneficial for students who struggle with pragmatic language, helping them to apply their verbal comprehension in real-world interactions.\r\n\r\nThank you again for providing needed materials I use during speech-language intervention. We have also worked on character development and prediction skills. The students are highly engaged in the chapter books and can not wait to read more. These books have sparked their interest in different types of genres like mystery. They have taken that newfound interest to look for books outside of our small groups to read on their own. \r\n\r\nReading in our groups looks like a book club. We read and discuss the text. The students share their thinking and reevaluate their thinking as they continue to read. They are excited to be able to create a book club wall where other groups can read about why they recommend the books. \r\n\r\nThe enjoyment from reading these books has enhanced our groups in such a way that I have had to reconstruct our weekly lesson plans to include a block of time dedicated to just reading and discussing the books.
