We've been sharing materials for so long that we hardly knew whose book was whose, and we were down to three calculators!\r\n\r\nWhen I handed each student their own brand-new materials, I saw the biggest smiles I've seen all year. Sometimes it's three students or five or more depending on who is at school and whether there was time for breakfast or money for lunch. The Internet Cafe has yet to run out of the simple yet appealing soups, and that means anyone who's hungry can eat.\r\n\r\nThe snacks are refilled every morning and again in the afternoon. Daily, students trickle or pile in to check out what's in the snack basket and choose something: a granola bar, a bag of chips, or crackers. I have my regulars and then others who pop in once in a while. The snack supply you've donated helps me spend personal money on supplemental, perishable items like bananas, oranges, and string cheese.\r\n\r\nIt's hard to put exact numbers on how many students have been served through this project, given the unpredictable nature of alternative education and attendance rates. However, I can safely say that an average of 15-20 students, sometimes as many as 25+, receive a snack or warm noodle soup every day as a result of the generosity of donors. That gives them the ability to stay at school longer and focus on work. It literally means the world to the adolescents who are here.\r\n\r\nAnother benefit of having food available to students when they need/want it is it helps create community. Frequently this year, one student will bring in another who is new to the alt ed program and show them, \"This is where the snacks are,\" \"This is how you make hot chocolate,\" \"Here's how to use the electric kettle to make noodles.\" It's community building in action! They learn to ask and say thank you and appreciate what is made available to them. \r\n\r\nI cannot thank my donors enough for helping fill the bellies of our alternative education students so that they can focus on filling their minds with knowledge, earning credits, and graduating on time. It seems like such a frivolous item, a cup of soup, but to a hungry 16-year-old, it is absolutely necessary. One learned to identify what they deserve in relationships, another recognized manipulative behaviors in a partner, and a third gained clarity about qualities they seek in a future partner. These insights highlight the program's transformative role in empowering students.\r\n\r\nThe story of one especially reserved student illustrates the group's impact. Initially withdrawn, he gradually gained confidence, built friendships, and found a supportive space where he could belong.
