We used tile nippers and cutters safely, wearing safety googles and proper coverings for our work spaces. Students assisted one another with cutting specific shapes and tiles and shared the most fancy tiles, which were not high in number, like the mirror tiles or color squares. Everybody designed a simple composition using symbolism and personal imagery, like their name initial or cultural idea. We worked on paper first and did a demonstration for each step of the process. Students were so excited to work with tile mosaic art, a refreshing change from our painting and drawing concentration. \r\n In the near future, I'd like to embark on a larger mosaic tile public art project for our school to enjoy in a shared space on campus. Reading in our classroom is currently individual, which makes it difficult for students to connect; with multiple texts, I am able to not only give students a choice of work to read with a partner and choose projects to show their learning, I am also able to give students greater autonomy for their education. I have noticed many of them do enjoy the graphic novels I have in the classroom library, and slowly \"graduate\" to traditional texts once they are comfortable with the English language. This is something that is distinctly powerful in cultures that are primarily based in the oral tradition, as opposed to the text-based Western education system. We've been using the big group boards for brainstorming and the small personal ones for quick practice, and it makes everything so much more hands-on. Whether they're scribbling ideas together at the new tables or using their personal boards to show me what they've learned, they are constantly talking to each other and sharing ideas.\r\n\r\nSeeing them this engaged and happy to work as a team has definitely been the highlight of my month.
