With all the wonderful resources in book rather than electronic form, not only can I use them as a reference when creating my Geometry lessons, I also thought of lending them out to students to review concepts they are currently going over in Geometry. Another Idea is for students to work on problems for bonus points, if they complete a task they are working on in class.\r\n I look forward to looking over the brain teaser books, to find problems that help students think, and apply the math they have learned. Perhaps they may get creative, and come up with solutions that are out of the ordinary. I have lent one set out to my math department to see if we can come up with other applications to the resources. I was able to receive the snacks for the end of this last Spring semester. My tutoring attendance was improved as expected by offering my students some 'Brain Snacks' during the tutorial sessions. When word of mouth got around the school, by Spring midterms, my attendance had doubled.\r\n I was also able to use the snacks to motivate teams to play review games before taking a Unit Assessment, as well as preparing for the Geometry final. I have some snacks left over for next semester to be able to use a boost in motivation to review, and attend future tutoring sessions. During lunch, some of my students come into my class to relax, and have played with some of the Game sets. They have been getting time to socialize with each other, and unplug from their phones.\r\n The other scenario has been when students have finished an assessment early, and assuming they have no school work to catch-up to, I have allowed students to play the games quietly while the other students finish their assessments.\r\n Overall, my students and I have been happy with the Brain Games, it has helped some of them forget their electronic devices, and I have been happy seeing them interact with each other in a real game setting. Students were recently taking a final and all of the calculators from my class set were taken up. Usually I allow students to share calculators for group work, but I couldn't in good faith do so for the final. Luckily I had a new set of calculators to lend out. The day was saved.\r\n I was also able to create a set of 'Quiz-Quiz-Trade' cards using the questions available in the 'Barron's' flash card set to help students prepare for a chapter exam. Because of your support, my school counseling office has become a place where students experiencing homelessness or living in foster care can have their most basic needs met with dignity and ease.\r\n\r\nWe are using the donated snacks and toiletries every single day. The snacks are openly available, and students now know they can stop by when they're feeling hungry and struggling to focus in class. One student recently shared that having a snack before heading back to class helped them \"finally feel calm enough to think.\" Moments like these happen often now, and they matter deeply. Thanks to your generosity, I no longer have to ration snacks. Instead, students are empowered to choose what they need on any given day, which has strengthened our connection and increased how often students check in with me for support.\r\n\r\nHaving the hygiene items visibly available has been especially powerful. In the past, it was difficult to identify when students needed hygiene items, as those conversations can feel uncomfortable or stigmatizing. By displaying these items openly, it has normalized conversations around basic needs and made it easier for students to name barriers—like lack of toiletries—that interfere with their ability to attend school regularly and confidently.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has helped transform my office into the safe space I've been working to create. When students know their basic needs will be met, they are more willing to engage in counseling, talk about academic challenges, and plan next steps for their education. Thank you for giving my students comfort, choice, and dignity. Your generosity has made a lasting impact on their daily lives and their ability to show up at school ready to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1762008027084,"projectUrl":"project/from-surviving-to-thriving-helping-stud/9728239/","projectTitle":"From Surviving to Thriving: Helping Students Meet Basic Needs","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp53562_orig.jpg?crop=1946,1946,x0,y123&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1652741923487","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/53562"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_28265","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1002,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":93,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":97,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.8,"schoolId":28265,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Maywood Academy High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Maywood Academy High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/los-angeles-unified-school-district/maywood-academy-high-school/28265"}
