The major difference between the academic program at Mary Meredith K-12 School and that of other self-contained ED classrooms is in the\r\ninstructional approach.\r\n\r\nThis approach periodically prioritizes behavioral intervention to maintain a positive and safe environment. When students are safe and ready to learn academic rigor resumes. Since Mary Meredith K-12 School students are working on modifying their behavioral responses to be successful in the traditional school model, the Mary Meredith K-12 School staff is committed to adjusting the instructional approach to coincide with the strengths and needs of students, thereby affording them a greater opportunity for academic success, social and living skills.\r\n\r\nEach Mary Meredith K-12 School teacher tailors her/his own classroom procedures, homework policies, grading practices, and discipline strategies that are in the best interests of the students in that classroom. Your contribution opened the door to lots of learning. I have already begun implementing engaging lesson plans based upon the books that you funded! \r\n\r\nThis past Monday, I used the book \"Color Monster\" with my children. \r\n\r\nOn our first read through of the book we identified the emotions and colors on each page and then colored a matching emoji. \r\n\r\nWe then worked on some fine motor scissor and glue skills by cutting and gluing each emotion into a paper divided into six sections. \r\n\r\nAfter that we picked out items that made each child feel each emotion to add to our sheet as well. There were all kinds of words for them to choose from that evoke different emotions. It was so cool to see how some items like \"rain\" evoked different emotions across children. Some children thought rain was calming, others shared that rain makes them happy or sad. \r\n\r\n\r\nDuring this time, we reviewed the emotions from the book and focused on formulating sentences to express how different items make us feel like \"Puppies make me happy.\" and \"I am scared of spiders.\" \r\n\r\nThen we colored our own monster based off how we felt. \r\n\r\nI made some examples for you that are attached as pictures. I wish I would have taken a picture of some of the children's pages, but they all were so eager to put them in their backpacks to take home and show off that I didn't get a picture of their work. \r\n\r\nI am looking forward to continuing to create engaging activities using the books you provided as a springboard for language, fine motor and learning!","fullyFundedDate":1733150733571,"projectUrl":"project/reading-is-fun/8968123/","projectTitle":"Reading is Fun!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. K","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9617483"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_63517","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":25,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":3,"percentLatinx":57,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.3,"schoolId":63517,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mary Meredith School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mary Meredith School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/tucson-unified-school-district/mary-meredith-school/63517"}
