As I mentioned in my original post, I just became my school librarian this year. One of the first things I noticed about the library was how small our Spanish collection was. I teach at a school in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood of Chicago, and our student population is 93% Hispanic. Yet the book selection in our library was only about 5% Spanish. Obviously increasing our Spanish-language collection was one of my top priorities this year.\r\n\r\nSeeing all the new Spanish books in our library brought immediate joy to my students, particularly to two classrooms: my 229 first graders and my 224 second graders. These are both classes of primarily Spanish-speaking (and reading!) students. Each week in library they were choosing books from a very small selection. This project exponentially increased how many books they have to choose from! They've been so excited to recommend books to each other and choose their new books each week.
