My students were thrilled when they first saw the new books, wiggly seats, playdough, and toys. Their faces lit up as they explored each item, and they could not wait to begin using everything. The wiggly seats have been especially helpful for students who need movement while learning, and the new books have already brought excitement and joy to our story time.\r\n\r\nWe are using the playdough and toys during our learning centers to strengthen fine-motor skills, creativity, language, and cooperation. One of my favorite moments was watching the children work together to create with the playdough while sharing tools and talking about their designs. These materials make learning feel playful and welcoming while helping my young students build important classroom skills.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue using these resources during literacy activities, imaginative play, and hands-on learning projects. The students will use playdough to form letters, build their names, and practice early math skills. We will also continue exploring our new books and learning how to retell stories, discuss characters, and share our ideas. These books have opened the door to meaningful conversations and have given my students tools they can use both inside and outside of the classroom. I'm so grateful for your investment in my students and for helping create a classroom where they feel safe, supported, and confident talking about their feelings. Your kindness truly makes a difference!\r\n\r\nWhat are some of the skills or lessons introduced by these new texts?\r\n\r\nThese books have been a really great way to help students talk about feelings and emotions that can sometimes be hard to put into words. We're reading about things like anger, sadness, worry, confidence, and learning how to handle big emotions. The stories give us a chance to talk about what characters are feeling, why they might be feeling that way, and what they can do when those emotions come up. I love that the books make these conversations feel natural. Students can talk about the characters and the situations in the stories, but they're also learning skills they can use in their own lives.\r\n\r\nWhat does reading look like in your classroom?\r\n\r\nReading with these books is very interactive. We'll read a story together and stop to talk about what's happening, how a character might be feeling, and whether students have ever felt something similar. Sometimes students share their own experiences, and other times they just listen and connect with what a character is going through. We also talk about different ways we can handle emotions, solve problems, and support our friends. It's been nice to see reading become more than just practicing reading skills—it's also become a way for us to learn about ourselves and each other.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who are especially enjoying the new books, and how so?\r\n\r\nI think these books have really connected with students who sometimes have a hard time talking about their feelings. Having a character go through something similar gives them a comfortable way to start a conversation. I've seen students recognize themselves in the stories and say things like, \"I feel that way sometimes,\" or share an idea about what the character could do. Other students really enjoy the confidence and friendship stories and like talking about how they can encourage and support each other. One particularly meaningful project we were able to do this year was a watercolor painting of dandelions, inspired by the book Carmela Full of Wishes by Matt de la Peña.\r\n\r\nAfter reading the story together and discussing the themes of hope, family, and making wishes, my students used donated watercolor sets and brushes to paint their own dandelions—each one representing a wish they held close to their hearts. Some wished for a puppy, others for peace, and a few for their family members to be happy and safe. The art supplies allowed them to express those wishes visually, creating a connection between literature, art, and their own personal stories.\r\n\r\nMany of my students had never used watercolor paints before. Watching them explore how colors blended and how they could create soft, wispy dandelions with just a few brushstrokes was magical. They were engaged, focused, and proud of their work. It sparked deep conversations about empathy, dreams, and resilience—all through a simple yet powerful art project.\r\n\r\nWithout the donated supplies, this experience wouldn't have been possible.
