Your generosity has already made a meaningful impact on our classroom. Because of you, my students will have access to literature that challenges them intellectually, invites honest reflection, and builds skills they will carry far beyond this school year.\r\n\r\nThese two texts were chosen intentionally to develop both academic skills and personal insights. Fahrenheit 451 introduces students to close reading and critical analysis at a deeper level. As sophomores, they are transitioning from simply understanding what a text says to analyzing how and why an author makes specific choices. This novel allows us to examine symbolism, theme, irony, and characterization, while also grappling with larger ideas such as censorship, conformity, and the value of independent thought. Students will practice evaluating complex ideas, supporting claims with textual evidence, and engaging in thoughtful discussion- skills that are essential for college, careers, and being a conscious citizen. \r\n\r\nLong Way Down offers a powerful contrast in form and voice. Written in verse, it allows students to analyze how structure, pacing, and word choice shape meaning. This text introduces lessons on perspective, conflict, and decision-making, while also emphasizing empathy and emotional intelligence. Sophomores often stand at a crossroads between childhood and adulthood, and this novel speaks to that moment! It encourages students to consider how choices are influenced by circumstance, tradition, and emotion, and how even a single moment can alter a person's life path.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students do not simply read silently and move on. They annotate, ask questions, mark moments of confusion or curiosity, and engage in discussion with peers. My goal as their teacher is to create a space where students feel safe to share ideas, agree to disagree, and grow as thinkers. Having these class sets of books ensures that every student can fully participate, without worrying about access or availability. Our school district has faced some financial challenges in the past year, and this opportunity would not have been possible without your generosity. \r\n\r\nAlthough we have not yet begun these novels (we will do so after Christmas break), my students are already especially excited! When the books arrived, several students immediately flipped through Long Way Down, intrigued by its cover, verse format, and modern voice. Others were drawn to Fahrenheit 451, asking questions about why it has been challenged or banned in the past. These early moments of curiosity matter. They signal engagement, anticipation, and a willingness to dive into challenging material- something that is not always easy for adolescents navigating busy, distraction-filled lives.\r\n\r\nThere are also students in my class who do not always see themselves as readers. For them, holding a brand-new book sends a powerful message. It tells them that their learning matters and that they are capable of engaging with meaningful, complex texts. I have already seen some quieter students linger after class, asking what the books are about or when we will start reading them together.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, these students will not just read stories; they will build skills, confidence, and understanding. Your support creates opportunities for deep thinking, meaningful conversation, and personal growth. Thank you for believing in my students and for investing in their education at such an important stage in their lives. I am incredibly grateful, and I cannot wait to see how these books shape our classroom after winter break.","fullyFundedDate":1758837568829,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-powerful-stories-to-every-stude/9713695/","projectTitle":"Bringing Powerful Stories to Every Student","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Patrone","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10260856"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83301","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":342,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":83,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":54.8,"schoolId":83301,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Martin's Ferry High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Martin's Ferry High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/martins-ferry-city-school-district/martins-ferry-high-school/83301"}
