Our unit on social emotional learning is so important to not only emotional growth, but academic growth. Students who feel safe at school and are able to identify their feelings have a much greater chance at success. Through these book sets, the students have been able to identify emotions, discuss and learn strategies to deal with feelings, and apply what they have learned to real world situations. Each text set relates previously learned feelings to the new one. This repetitive reading engrains important information in my student's brains. They have learned that everyone feels all different emotions, and that it is okay to feel emotions such as anger and sadness. They have also learned how to show kindness, honesty, and patience through the Spot book sets. The holiday book set was especially fun for them to read.
