Hinton in a meaningful and impactful way. This classic novel has allowed us to explore themes of identity, loyalty, and social class while helping students strengthen essential reading skills such as making inferences, analyzing character development, and identifying how conflicts shape a story. These lessons not only improve their comprehension but also encourage them to reflect on the world around them—how people treat one another and the importance of empathy.\r\n\r\nReading The Outsiders in our classroom has been dynamic and interactive. Students annotate as they read, participate in lively discussions about choices the characters make, and connect Ponyboy's story to their own experiences of friendship, belonging, and resilience. One student, who was initially reluctant to read, has shared how this book made them \"actually want to find out what happens next,\" while another has been inspired to start writing stories of their own. The energy in the room during reading time is exciting—students ask deeper questions, debate perspectives, and truly look forward to our next chapter together.\r\n\r\nYour support made this journey possible, and for that, we are incredibly grateful. Because of your kindness, The Outsiders isn't just being read—it's sparking conversations, inspiring students, and helping them see themselves in literature.","fullyFundedDate":1746648956925,"projectUrl":"project/changing-the-setting-keeping-the-messag/9235242/","projectTitle":"Changing the Setting, Keeping the Message","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gonzalez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5203892_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1519677385067","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5203892"},{"teacherId":9831296,"projectId":8932095,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the funding. If you know anything about middle school kids, you know they usually do not like to read, so finding a book that can hook some of my toughest or most reluctant students is definitely a win. \r\n\r\nLast semester, I taught a new class, so the curriculum was definitely a figure-it-out-as-we-go type. This semester, I am feeling so much more confident in the curriculum, using or incorporating these books into what we are learning about. The class is all about True Crime, and I love the idea of using multiple story types to teach this curriculum. These books will help do just that. \r\n\r\nNext quarter, I plan on doing a choice activity with the rest of the books. Students will get to choose the book, read it, and examine how the story is told and how that influences the story.
