The authentic texts gave them the opportunity to connect with Spanish language and culture in a much deeper and more meaningful way. Students were excited to read about topics that were relevant and engaging, while also building their vocabulary, reading comprehension, and cultural understanding. Reading these magazines became a valuable part of our classroom and helped students see Spanish as a language they could use to explore the world.\r\n\r\nThe ¡Qué Tal! magazines were an excellent resource that helped prepare my students for their next level of Spanish. Throughout the school year, I saw significant growth in their confidence, fluency, and overall language proficiency. Parents and other teachers also noticed the improvement from the beginning of the school year to the end. Most importantly, my students became more comfortable reading and discussing authentic Spanish texts and developed a stronger appreciation for the cultures and communities they were learning about. For some of my kids, this is the first time they've had a book enter their homes and I am so beyond happy that they were able to have this opportunity! Hatchet didn't stop in my classroom, however. Kids began talking to other teachers about the novel, leading those teachers to check out their own copies from the local libraries so that they could have discussions with my students. Other students in the building searched for copies of Hatchet, and several times I found my kids, who are nervous in their ability to read aloud, reading the chapters to their friends. \r\n\r\nStudents were also able to connect Hatchet to history and science class, turning in reflections about Brian's situation and connecting it to historical events. They also had many nature and biology questions to ask the science teachers as well. Overall, your contribution to my classroom went far beyond these four walls and I hope you know how much of a positive impact you have made!
