As the boxes of books arrived, the students grew increasingly excited at the prospect of getting down to business and digging into some good literature. \r\n\r\nIt has been an absolute pleasure to see how my students have grown since we started reading \"Brock\", the first book in this series. One of my classes in particular tends to require a lot of encouragement to get excited about reading; they're interested in a good story but don't tend to go out of their way to engage with one. Well, author Anthony McGowan has changed all that! A couple of chapters in, I had students sidling up to me at the beginning of class asking, \"Are we going to read today?\" One shy young man, extremely quiet and whose participation usually required superhuman engagement effort on my part, started coming up to me outside of class, wanting to chat me up about the storyline and ask questions about future chapters. Be still my heart! Never in a million years would I have expected this student to be so deeply invested in a book. \r\n\r\nThese books are magical because not only are they well-written and thoughtfully formatted, they are meaningful to my students. McGowan's writing style is both accessible and genuine; he has captured the voices of his characters and in spare prose, conveyed their strength and their fragility in a way that my students can relate to. My class is emotionally invested in the story and the characters, and have been demonstrating their ability to make inferences way more frequently and spontaneously than before, to debate, to think creatively and imagine a character's next steps or past history. And the best part is that this is quite often unprompted. \r\n\r\nWith your support, my students have been able to experience the magic of a good book, and to believe in themselves as readers. They very much look foward to engaging in the rest of the series next school year. It's true: Everyone CAN be a reader, with the right book.","fullyFundedDate":1738980176828,"projectUrl":"project/everyone-can-be-a-reader-with-the-right/8845312/","projectTitle":"Everyone Can Be a Reader, with the Right Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Metzger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9459172"},{"teacherId":9458231,"projectId":8593688,"letterContent":"First, thank you for supporting my classroom activity...\"We can see it while we sit with it\" which was designed to tandem our ongoing introspective activities in my psychology course which contains junior and senior high school students. \r\n\r\nThe white board for which you provided, allowed us to take our class out of the classroom and experience a different setting for our \"wellness\" activity. The white board served as a final conduit to gather our thoughts collectively following a series of wellness info-graphics placed around the high school for students to review, analyze and ponder. The students were able to sit silently for a while...\"Sitting by themselves\" and thinking, reacting, possibly journaling their thoughts was paramount. They did just that as we found a quiet place, outside the classroom. There was an extended period of silence as they sat with their thoughts which was very important. A whole group discussion then ensued and the whiteboard was used to track the collective thoughts, questions, agreements, disagreements and general comments. The shared discussion was deeply personal and showed students used their introspective skills. Teenagers need these types of activities to help harness personal growth.","fullyFundedDate":1723468136973,"projectUrl":"project/-we-can-see-it-while-we-sit-with-it/8593688/","projectTitle":"\" We Can See It While We Sit With It\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Popolizio","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9458231"},{"teacherId":9462441,"projectId":8203124,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of the Garmin R10 Launch Monitor, The hitting mat, impact screen, and the other accessories.
