In my 5th grade classes, the boomwhackers and new books created an instant sense of energy and curiosity. Students were eager to jump in, and even those who are usually hesitant to participate were fully engaged in our rhythm and pitch activities. Using the boomwhackers, students worked in small groups to build patterns and layer parts together, which helped them internalize steady beat, note relationships, and ensemble awareness in a really accessible way. The new books have also allowed students to practice reading and responding to music more independently, giving them structure while still keeping lessons interactive and hands-on.\r\n\r\nFor my 6th–8th grade orchestra students, the new strings and shoulder rests made an immediate difference. Students noticed right away that their instruments felt more comfortable and easier to play, especially those who had been struggling with posture or tension. The improved setup has helped reinforce proper playing position and has already led to a more focused, resonant sound across the ensemble. One moment that stood out was hearing students reflect on how much \"better\" and \"clearer\" they sounded after just one class period. Those small changes have had a big impact on both their confidence and overall performance quality.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, 5th-grade students will continue building foundational skills through structured music literacy activities and begin creating their own short rhythmic and melodic compositions using what they've learned. In orchestra, students will apply their improved technique and sound to more advanced ensemble work, focusing on balance, blend, and musical expression as we prepare upcoming repertoire. Across all grade levels, these resources are helping students feel more successful, more engaged, and more connected to their growth as musicians.","fullyFundedDate":1769177307887,"projectUrl":"project/updated-materials-and-books/9968462/","projectTitle":"Updated Materials and Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kindsvater","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9013287"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_41437","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":382,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.2,"schoolId":41437,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Longs Peak Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Longs Peak Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/st-vrain-valley-school-district-re-1j/longs-peak-middle-school/41437"}
