The aquarium water chiller keeps our salmon tank water perfectly cold, so that our salmon eggs have the optimum conditions to hatch and develop during our school year. The kids have gone on two salmon related field trips to prepare for raising their own salmon. Now they are getting the opportunity to observe and record the development of their eggs as they hatch into alevin, then grow into fry. This coming January, we will have another field trip to a fish hatchery to further learn about fish anatomy and physiology. Finally, in the spring, we will release our coho salmon fry into the river. Throughout the year, as the fish undergo each phase of the salmon lifecycle, we will make a model of each step, so that by the end of the year, we'll have spawning adults, eggs, alevin, fry and smolts hanging from our ceiling in a big circle representative of their continuous life cycle.
