Please know that by helping us purchase the Yoto player for my class, you are positively impacting the educational experience of 24 kindergarteners...and many more in the years to come!\r\nFrom the moment students arrive in my classroom, they are greeted with music from live radio stations from their countries of origin. Through the Yoto, we have enjoyed everything from Colombian vallenatos to cumbias and traditional children's songs. Even listening to some local radio commercials gives students a little taste of home! This particular group of students loves to dance more than any I've ever had, and one of our favorite ways to celebrate perfect attendance (or just to get our wiggles out) is with an impromptu dance party.\r\nDon't worry, the Yoto player also helps us during independent work or yoga, when we listen to calming or classical music. Students are beginning to learn how to use the Yoto independently in small groups to listen to pre-recorded stories read by me or professionally produced tracks. It reminds me of photos from the 1930s showing children gathered around radios to hear stories. This practice is helping improve their listening skills and sparking their imaginations.\r\nI am especially excited for the day when students become more proficient readers and can record themselves reading stories for their classmates. This will be an incredible confidence builder for some, and a motivating incentive for others!\r\n\r\nThank you again so much for sponsoring this project and bringing bilingual and bicultural music and literacy to my classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1755948367269,"projectUrl":"project/please-press-play-on-read-aloud-magic-in/9454590/","projectTitle":"Please Press Play on Read-Aloud Magic in English and Español!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. R.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/197300"},{"teacherId":416279,"projectId":9474931,"letterContent":"Since a picture is worth a thousand words I wanted you to see the expressions on the faces of the students as they played the Boomwahcker tubes you provided for them and I didn't want you to wait until January to see them. The students were so excited to play them that I decided to get them out right away. Many of the students come from other countries and don't know how to speak English, but they easily matched the color of the Boomwhacker with the display and were able to play simple songs without much practice. It made them feel a part of the class and welcomed to school. \r\nRight away they were able to read music through playing colors and letters. Playing the Boomwhackers increased their tracking and improved their reading fluency. They were reading pitches before they could even read words! They copied and read rhtyms with the Boomwhackers. Having to play only one note in a song and then trade with another student helped their social-emotional competency, memory, attention, and problem solving skills. They developed confidence and pride in their accomplishment through performance. \r\nPerforming with Boomwackers increased student engagement in otherwise shy students or those who lack language skills.
